In Vic you have to get a Unregisted Vehicle Permit and it costs me $41.60 for a week (might have gone up as that was 12 months ago).

You just call up Vicroads, give them your details and they will fax you a copy or you go down to your friendly Vicroads and get it from there.

Allows you too:
1/ Take in from where you bought it to your home or place of garage.
2/ To use the vehicle between 7am to 7pm to travel to a Licenced Vehicle Tester for repairs and testing for the purpose of obtaining a RWC.

I once bought a new motorbike in Melb and rode it to Echuca (where I was living at the time back in '96) on an unregistered permit (about 220km). The next day I rode it across the Murray to Moama in NSW and registered it there as it was ultimately coming home to Sydney.
it's the CBR600 that I had at the Graham Russell Dyno day for those that were there.

I thought the VIC system was you get the permit (max time is 1 month) and you can only drive it where it's specified on the paper, be it to a RWC place or repairer

you can only get one for your car, in the time you own it, but they don't check

and plus, where i live isnt exactly crawling with police...
