If your firewall has 6 nuts like this photo then it is a MK2 model starting from early 1969. Attachment: MK2 Firewall.jpg The top of the radiator shroud should have YG2S1 xxx, YG2S3 xxx, YG2S4 xxx or YA2S5 xxx. From the angle of the engine bay photo you supplied I think yours is missing. Attachment: YG2S4 781.jpg The next thing to look at is the body number. Between March 1969 and May 1970 it will have a body number and body code in the drain gutter above the wiper motor. xxx 2/04, xxx 2/05, xxx 2/05A, xxx 2/06. |

How about this for a theory? Given the wiper motor suggests that the car maybe from around 10/69 there would not have been an ID plate or compliance plate fitted on an Australian built car. Maybe a previous owner in Japan didn't know this and decided to fit a plate. Given that there wouldn't be many Minis of this vintage in Japan, a compliance plate was sourced from a wrecker from another BMC car - an MG. Perhaps to satisfy registration requirements - i.e. a compliance/ID plate was mandatory for registration. Either way Kimura san will need to look for identifiers stamped directly into the car body, e.g. on the radiator shroud. |

It may have one so I will wait for a better photo to come through. If not we will need to look at either the gutter above the wiper motor or the firewall behind the master cylinders for a body number and body code. |

Good evening, I am excited to hear your thoughts! I am a 31 year old woman living in Japan. This mini is the second mini. and before used to have a Paul Smith white mini. An acquaintance gave me this Australian mini. But I didn't know much about the Austrian minis. If it's an Mk2, my mini has the wrong front badge. I would like to return to my original appearance as much as possible. |

Thank you very much. You have given me important knowledge. I know what I need to check points Now Mini is going to the factory for painting. There are many things to check when mini return  Is it likely to be mk2 at the moment? From the engine number, I thought it was mk1. |

What about the first photo that shows the drivers side floor? I can not see the indent where the hydro lines, etc run. This section looks more 850 / Mk1 to me (but the wiper scuttle looks Aussie Mk2 / K). |

I noticed that too strikers on b pillar are really recessed for wind up windows I noticed the bonnet prop on inner guard is towards the front more I would be tempted to say it could be pre mini k; mk2 |

I don't have much knowledge about Mini K. Is the Mini K a 1100 engine? Does that mean you might have ported the mk1 cooper S engine to the body of the mk2 mini K?

If you can get a photo of the firewall we can work out if the car is a Mk1 or Mk2. The chassis and body stamps will tell us what the car is and then we can work out a date. |

One of the differences between a Mini K and a MK2 S is the length of the front guard to body join cover strip. On the S the strip is shorter as the original type narrow guard flares had a very narrow slot width where the body join is. The full length body join strip wouldn't fit in the narrow width slot of the flare so it was shortened by about an inch or so??? The body in the pic has a full length join strip. The upholstery pattern is the common Mini K/Mk2 S pattern. Looks like it is probably a Mini K shell with a MK1 1275 S engine transplant. RonR |
