Spent this afternoon stripping the engine in preparation to rebuild it.. It's amazing how much easier the job can be with the right tools. Firstly I borrowed a flywheel puller from my mate who had also given me a hand to paint my car a few weeks back and it took me about 40 minutes to get the flywheel off (that included the half hour drive there and back to get said tool).

I carried on stripping the motor down not believing how easy it was. Don't get me wrong, I'm grateful that it was easy, but considering the amount of crud on the outside I thought it would be a lot, LOT more harder than it was..

Everything looks pretty good, no caked on crud to be found anywhere. Gearbox looks nice, nice and smooth to turn, not a heap of play.

The car drove really nice when it was on the road with only a couple of tuning problems. Bit of bluish/black smoke out the back and idling problems..

When taking the crank out I did find a small problem and I'm not that concerned about it the crank seems fine with only very minor scoring, using the fingernail test

I would measure all the crank journals (including crankpins) with a micrometer.. if worn .001" oval, or more, get it reground to the next undersize.
Those bearings are not normal....

That's an understatement

I had to look twice because I was sure it couldn't have been that bad, but sure enough... TUH DUH!!!!! There you have it

But yes I'll take the whole lot down to an engine place and get them to go over it.

Popped the flywheel off the spare motor and got it ready to split off the gearbox. Gotta say that so far this is looking like a good little unit, standard bore with only a little wear, flywheel looks brand new as does the oil pump 8)

Regardless, it's still getting a +100 bore and a set of flat-tops, RE13 and a head job 8)

Fitted the radiator onto the now freshly painted mini deluxe engine, needed to adjust the mounting brackets for the correct radiator due to previous owner fitting an 1100 radiator? Should now be able to refit the engine into the car tonight. :)

Yes, thank you.
I have been accused of getting carried away. again :?:
I did start out with a gearbox repair job following an oil change.
But you know how it happens
Well I will replace all of the bearings in the gearbox
Maybe I should check the engine bearings, hmm need replacing
Maybe I need to have GR work some magic on the camshaft.
Maybe I need to clean the rust from around the master cylinders and repaint the engine bay?
Might as well strip the paint of the engine and repaint it. :)

Sounds like me, but i managed to run out of money early on, so it only got treated to a full set of gaskets and seals, electronic ignition and a conversion to pot joints. Oh and a cross pin diff.

Welded a patch into the floor of my shell. Had I been in the UK, I'd probably have ordered a repair panel, which would have made it easier. I hate when you think you've cut right back to solid steel but it's so thin it just disappears when you weld. Eventually got it done though, so one wee corner to sort then off to sandblasting to see if I missed any bits.

Finished rebuilding a Mini K/Morris 1100 remote box for Morris 1100, out of the 2 he gave me.
One was pretty knackered- the bottom drop gear was loose on the 1st motion shaft, its needle bearing inside had self destructed, and the 4th gear synchro ring was in 3 pieces on the sump plug.....
Ah well.. I used its case, and the cluster gear. 8)

Split the spare motor's block off the 'box. Looks like someone has spent some time on this donk some time in the past, everything's been balanced from the flywheel to the crank to the damper. Haven't stripped the 'box down yet, but at first glance it looks to be in good nick too 8)
