1500mi service:

Oil change, greased all the nipples, removed cleaned & refitted both HS2 dashpots and pistons, blew out the air filters with compressed air, greased both door strikers and latches, adjusted rear brakes, retensioned the fan belt, dropped the hydro fluid out of both sides and refilled to three fingers height at the front wheel.

Thought about adjusting the tappets, but didn't have a rocker cover gasket handy in case the old one didn't seal.

Forgot to adjust the clutch.

Drove it for the 4th time in less than a month. Third time picking up the boy from school since moving. :) You should see the disapproving looks I get - yes, it's loud, and they all seem to think I'm a 'hoon' (modern, tabloid tv definition, not traditional definition) who won't give way to their kids at the crossing (my boy's in Prep, I'm not an idiot). :P

Coming home... First off, the clutch decided it wanted pumping (does that very occasionally - I haven't investigated it - worked fine after it was pumped). Then it started to miss when accellerating, or holding a steady speed (roughly 60) in 4th. :? When home, I tried revving it in neutral - it was happy to rev cleanly and higher than it had before it started breaking down whilst driving. Plugs and HT Leads were replaced by a reputable Mini specialist maybe 500km ago (I don't drive much, it might be 9 months ago), electronic dissy conversion 13 months ago (that was a saga - the thread on here that I joined ended up at 9 pages)... So tomorrow I'll have to dig out the multimeter (thankfully I've seen it since my move) and pull the plugs to try and see where the problems lie. Perfect timing - just when the wife's been saying it's not a reliable car.

I decided that since the 1412 stroker is going in next week, let's put the Russell Engineering 7" manifold and HS6 on the 1360, and make sure it fits, so no surprises...

Guess what, it don't fit. But it did, in a 77 Clubby body.

On my 1970 `matic shell:
1. Float bowl fouls on the firewall. If I do surgery to clear it, the bottom LH instrument pod screw & captive nut has to go, the angled bit of firewall below the speedo hole has to be cut out or bashed flat..
2. Ramflo filter base fouls on the speedometer cable. Might need a 90° cable box.
3. I would have to use bolts in the carby, not studs- there's no room to put the carby over the studs. (or I could slot out the manifold/head flanges so I can drop the manifold and carby on vertically, but I don't like butchering them like this).

So all this might upset the 1412 install schedule a bit.
I'm not prepared to run it on the road with no air filter.

45 Dellorto is going back on tomorrow.

[edit] After a bit more measuring I think raising the carby angle from 12° to 15° would help, if I do it by milling the manifold/head flanges it will lift the carby up too. I left them 10mm thick in case I had to.

[edit] stuff it, I'm keeping the 45DHLA Dellorto. I'll sell the bloody HS6 SU & manifold setup.

Got the head back all nice and clean. Got cam belt retainer/spacer machined up and given to me yesterday. Fits beautifully. Was supposed to have the new seals and belt last night too but plans have changed and I'll now get them Sunday. Got all next week off work. I think I know what I'll be doing :)

I hope you have bought some offset cam keys, the cam keyway in these Triger kits is a few degrees out. I had to put a 5° one in my 1412, and the 1360 has a 4° one.

You got nothing on the guy who dropped his little girl off at school..on the back of a motorbike with no safety gear but the mandatory helmet. I coulda stabbed him in the eye with a pencil I was so angry. Take chances with your own life I say, but not someone elses.

Ahh... Bikes. I remember being 5 years old (mid 80's), squashed between my mother and step father (him driving), on the back of a trail bike going up 50 minutes of single lane dirt road with logging trucks coming the other way... Wearing nothing more than a leather flying cap. I don't think I was ever given anything more than a helmet at the best of times! When we first met aforementioned man, he owned a Bedford van. I found out that the rear seat in it wasn't bolted down when he jumped on the brakes going down a hill, and the seat tried to roll forward onto me.

It's amazing how safety standards have changed... Now, a slightly throbbing exhaust note and you're worse than an axe murderer, even if you've got your child safely secured (booster and belt), and you're attentive to the fact there are kids about.
