G'day all, Long time british car tragic, specifically BMC. My Grandpa was a BMC dealer and introduced me to the rites and rituals. Despite that, my first car was a Hillman Minx (this is back in the seventies). I gave her to my sister when I bought a bright red Mini Van. Bright red? She was post box red, literally - she was an ex PMG van complete with the tyre pressures written in yellow on the wheel arches. Living in Adelaide as I did (and do again), she was the car that a very nervous 22 year old loaded all his worldly possessions into and drove to Sydney to start a new job. That wee Mini did the Sydney-Adelaide run every Easter, Christmas and a holiday for nearly three years. The trick was to leave after work, drive till knackered then have a kip behind some bushes somewhere, then head off again to get to the other end about lunch time. Couldn't do it now, they invented motels for a reason, but seeing I live in Adelaide again, it's no real issue. Sold her to buy some jap thing ... which I sold fairly quickly to buy my first MGB, another significant vehicle in my life.
Since then, I've owned lots of motor cars and motorbikes, but after that first Mini van, I've owned a sedan that I was only able to own for a short period (used it for motorkhanas and generally being stupid), and after that first MGB, I've owned an MGB GT (converted her from RHD to LHD myself) and my current MGB which I've had for 13 years.
So why am I here?
Well, the MGB is my daily driver ... only it doesn't get driven every day because when possible/practical/I-feel-like-it, I ride the pushbike. She does get used for half the time at least though because I have my daughter for half the time and I need to get her to school. The other car is a Falcon, which my son uses for uni. He's about to buy his own car (I hope) and seeing I can only afford to run one car, I have to choose which one will be sold. Well, I'm not going to live by Falcon.
It's only me and the two kids, and three do not fit (legally) into an MGB. So, I need a car with rear seats, even though the rears will only be needed occasionally. Guess what a Mini has. The current plan is to flog both the MG and the Falcon and buy a Mini, then slowly hot her up.
So I've moved from the MG Experience to here, hopefully to have a valid reason for being here at some point.
In the meantime, if anyone has a Mini they'd like to swap for an MGB (value about $7,000), give a yell. I'm serious.
