Binnacle with screen, it's a bit rough (I like to call it a prototype!!). The software is called Centrafuse, and provides a front end for mp3, video, navigation, photos, web cam, web browser etc etc.

Another view of the screen, excuse the dust. Can see the audio out from the PC being fed to the Line In of the head unit, which then goes off to the amp..

This is the megajolt software showing the map at top, and rpm, manifold vacuum and advance..

An old POS HP laptop, 1.7GHz Pentium M, 1Gb RAM, nothing exciting! It sits on the passenger seat until I modify the laptop power button with extended wires and push button so it can go in the switch panel.

I don't like the screen, it looks too out of place. If I make another binnacle, I'll get a carbon fibre one from UK, and when I cut the screen opening I'll leave 5mm radius corners to make it look a bit more 'old fashioned'

Plugs, points, rotor button, timing, mixture, compression test.......all good in that department now.
Pulled the drums off the back to find both rear wheel cylinders have started to leak. New shoes and pads needed as well.

It was time for the annual clean and polish. I used the random collection of Maguires and Mothers brands I had stashed away to cobble together some sort of ordered system of rub back, swirl removal and polish. Nothing is more confusing than trying to work out what each bottle does and where it sits in the polishing process. Each brand seems to have 399 part cleaning processes where each bottle cost about 25 dollars to buy..
Carnuaba Wax Cleaner?? WTF does that do? Remove the wax? Clean the existing wax or add new wax?? When do I use it? Before the rub back? After the swirl removal or before the fianl Carnuaba waxing...All the bottle says is wax on then wax off...
I think its role might be to sneak up on the paint, bottle 120 lulls it into a false sense of security, bottle 298 scares the paint into surrendering and 340 bottle takes it into custody while the 399 beats it up with a telephone book.

It's all built from stuff i had lying around..

the screen was $700 when I got it in 2005, can get cheaper ones now (~$250).
laptop is an old Pentium M 1.7GHz worth <$100 Had that lying around for years too
Car laptop charger $40

There are free and non-free software solutions for GPS/Audio/Video etc, RideRunner is free, Centrafuse is not. I'm using centrafuse as it's simple and works. RideRunner is free and extremely customisable and has a good support community but I don't have time to tinker with that at the moment

Then it's just cabling, fabrication, extras like GPS receiver ($50-$100), wireless keyboard ($40). If you don't want a headunit there are USB FM radios available.

I want to add a vellemans USB IO board so I can hook up the fuel gauge, RPM, speedo etc. This board is only $60, and there are control plugins available for RideRunner to interface with it.

Thought about my MkII a lot (body's on a spit in the driveway), mainly when I was supposed to be working. Rang the mechanic to see if the brake guys have sorted the Estate's custom master cylinder (don't ask), watched another disk out of the 7 for spray painting a car with mullet boy then checked out Ausmini for the second time today. Boy, I'm beat...

Thats not bad at all, i figured it wouldnt need much to run, but i had no idea the software existed. Well done man thats really cool, makes me want to do it, its something you could add to and improve over time as well, that always makes me nice and moist...
