Seems like there is an aweful lot of positive opinions on roundies but not too many factual advantages to back them up.

Let's face it we all love an expensive, unreliable, noisy, smelly, 50 year old design car. Rationality doesn't really come into it here. Touchy feely stuff like personal preference and aesthetics does.

See there is your problem: equal weighting.

If one of the hyperthetical Clubman cons was "wheels fall off & the car catches on fire every time you drive it", but the counter balancing pro was "more room in engine bay", no one would consider it a good car.

All pro & cons are not created equal.

The fuglyness of the clubby front end certainly weights more highly that "more room in the engine bay" for me :D

[seriously, some clubbies look good, most don't]

Sore back in the Deluxe after half an hour (low back seats)

that's hardly a drawback...my deluxe never went for more than 30mins without breaking down and so ya never noticed the bad seating...therefore that's really a mute point

here's a pro for ya...roundnoses would probably be SLIGHTLY more aerodynamic than the clubman...maybe...i dunno...its rounder :P therefore more performance!

Hmmm... maybe not. In Modern Motor's road tests, the Clubby GT was near 2MPH faster than the Cooper S was.
GT got 98MPH both directions, Cooper S got 97.2 one way, average 96.1.
As reprinted in Pedr Davis's Mini Minor Downunder book. 8)

Mk2 S and Clubby GT were identical mechanically.

bah...i refuse to believe it :P its blasphemy damnit BLASPHEMY!!!!
i can explain that...the clubman is less aerodynamic on the back coz of the square lights right...and so there was a slight tailwind during the run of the clubman and the slight aerodynamic inefficiency caused by said square taillights caused the clubman to go faster as it was being pushed along by the breeze!!! EUREKA!

But the GT had a weight advantage after the rust fell out.

its a combination really...square lights + tailwind + lighter coz of rust fallout = faster time...its all in the maths :P
plus the guy who drove them probably liked clubmans more...and so drove it harder :P

or maybe the driver took a HUGE dump between runs...and that drastically improved the power to weight ratio of the clubman (which was run 2nd coz he was saving the best till last coz he was a clubman lover as previously stated)...

i think clubbies are a superior car because:

much much much easier to work on,
more thicky padded cloth/velour high back seats that fold forward to allow rear axs
vinyl trim on the interior bodywork
retractable inertia seatbelts
rear seat belts
carpet as standard
heater with fan, adjustable settings hot/cold/warm, screen/car standard on all models with fresh air intake and demist on both sides of the windscreen
two speed wipers
pot joints rather than uni joints
rattle free rod change gearshift with lift for reverse

steering column lock with accessory setting
direction indicator warning lights on dash
water temperature guage
tachometer standard on most models
radio as standard on most models
trimmed padded dashboard
seats dont lift forward in a crash
park brake light and brake fail light fitted to some models
remote bonnet release

adjustable dash illumination switch
electric windscreen washer
larger clutch and brake pedals
padded steering wheel
larger gear knob
twist on oil filter
alternator and negative earth
larger front and rear running/brake/indicator lamps

optional fog/driving lamps,
heated rear window,
tinted windows
dual horns
radial tyres
alloy wheels
halogen headlights

in finishing it is my opinion that the roundnose version and especially the immortal cooper S is a more beautiful and classic car

Don't worry- the seatbelt will hold both you, and the puny seat securely.
