Hi,
I agree with the difference as one of my cars is 502 and the other is 504 and my clubman is 500.
All I was stating with my previous comment is it is amazing what digits may really be under layers of paint. I almost bought a 1969 S a couple of years ago everything was there except the comp plate, The owner wouldn't let me scratch the Rad Shroud, the Rad Shroud said YG2S1--- so I didn't buy it. A mate took a chance bought it, went home wire brushed the Rad Shroud, it was not a 1 but a 4 no reading YG2S4. Everytime I see him he reminds me.
Mark 1 S's should have a body plate, anyway somebody is happy with there purchase and good luck to them as it is none of my business.
Thanks

And a lot of 69 cars didn't even have an ID plate fitted.
69 cars are the hardest to indentify.

I will throw my hat into the ring and say that looking at the photos on ebay it looks to me like the car is a cocked up Deluxe and not a Cooper S.
Just a couple of thing do not look right. :?
You do not need to look at the numbers to know a Cooper S.

not a Deluxe, see windscreen scuttle.
has early model master cylinders.
Brake booster lines look suss.
Ash tray not "s"
who knows?

Oh don't rely on so called professional opinions. I once saw a 'genuine' 997 Cooper being sold overseas that had a Mini K scuttle!!!!! that had the professional 'yes'

Yes, you are right about the scuttle panel, it would be a K not a deluxe.
Lots of bits are early and lots of bits are late. It just reeks of a car built out of bits.

Or it looks like a late 69 car, good luck to whom ever purchased it and I hope you enjoy it and please ignore all the supposed experts on here who can tell you what the car is without getting close enough to actually inspect the vehicle. I really doubt that there is more than 1 or 2 real Cooper S left as they left the factory so just enjoy what you have and dont let anyone tell you its not real
