well I'll put my 2c worth in... My first car was a mini and I was just on my P's when I got her. It was a little $1800 bomb and I learnt how to change thermostats and fuel filters and accelerator cables on the side of the road with nothing but a pair of pliers and a paperclip (well I may have had more for the thermostat, but that was it for the fuel filter I can tell you that

). I had to clutch start her backwards down my parent's front yard more mornings than not and constantly ran out of fuel cos the fuel gauge didn't work... But I wouldn't have changed a thing and pined for a mini every day since selling her.
I reckon they are a great car for a P plater cos you aren't gonna get them up to 220kph and wrap it around a tree as easily as a ricer, and it's just a great experience when you are young and free and stupid to be able to drive and park just about anywhere and get away with it cos you're in a mini.
Yes, have it for your daily driver as you will get a very fast working knowledge of mechanincs (if you didn't already have one). Yea, things go wrong with them, but hell, things go wrong with every car... I have had a Commodore, a Rodeo, a Jeep and a Patrol since then, and I reckon more has gone wrong (and more expensive things too) with them than the little idiosyncracies the minis have.
I'll get back down off my soap box now
