When I eventually get my Mini and Moke on the road then my security will consist of a highly visable steering lock, a less visible battery isolator, a motion detector into a highly audible alarm (to hopefully stop the di*kwits who like to roll Minis on their sides) and finally when I can find or adapt something a GPS tracking device that I can access with my mobile phone.

I've got an alarm on the Rover, with motion detectors and a siren, but I have had to silence the siren due to false alarms. :(

Still I think one of the most effective parts of the alarm is the flashing red light on the dash.

A battery cut out in the boot is good, a hidden ignition kill wire is also good. But there is very little point in fitting an ignition switch if the crook can open the bonnet in two seconds and hot-wire the car under the bonnet.

An immobiliser is a fancy name that really means a kill switch on the starter and ignition wires. Easily bypassed from under the bonnet.

look at the price of a mobile phone $100, it wouldn't be that exspensive to create a tracking device that can run off the cars source of power and for a period on its own power device, mount it under the seat or in the roof linning, anyways its something to dream about, the tracking device and a small alarm and red light is all i would want as security,

i have an imoboliser in my car that will be hooked up with my alarm, im alsop wandering if an alarm could be wired to my air horns, people would leep out of bed to see whats going on all up and down the road,

The trouble with a loud alarm is....
the crook sets it off and runs away
the crook sets it off and runs away
the crook sets it off and runs away
the crook sets it off and runs away
the crook sets it off and runs away
the crook sets it off and runs away

Then either two things happen.
1) Your battery goes flat and the crook can take the car.
2) The neighbours get so pissed off with the alarm that they help the crook take the car just for some peace and quiet.

People get used to a car alarm that repeatedly goes off and they will just stop looking to see what is going on.

I got this software for when i left my car parked up at my father-in-laws' place when we went overseas for 3 months:
http://www.gofinder.net/gofinder/GoFinder_Mobile/index_5.htm

Only 25 dollars for the software (gives you 25 location 'pings', then you can top up in bundles (about a dollar per ping), works on any Telstra mobile, so i had to buy a PAYG sim pack for an old phone (30 dollars) and set it up.

Didn't have time to set it up properly (ie hidden and connected to power source) before i went away but it was set up with a power line to the house and gaffer taped just under the front apron so that if someone rolled or drove the car away, the charging cable would just slip out and then i'd have as long as the phone would stay charged for to locate it.

Checked it periodically just for fun whilst i was abroad as we would have found out from the father in law if it had gone but it would have been crucial if that had happened.

Only downside is that it gives you the location to within a range of as little as 100m to as much as 2km, better than nothing though and really very cheap considering.

PS - it's not actually software, it's just a licence to have an account really. It's all web based and nothing needs to be installed, but rather stupidly you still have to buy the CD as you get the licence key with it. Could just as easily be bought online and get the registration by email as you can do everything online anyway, but anyway, that's how they make it!

hey weeval, can you see your phone location on your computer screen or is it a thing where you ring up and ask, is it accurate to see which residential house they are in, if its accurate then thats all that counts, it would be me and the crook

does anyone bolt, chain or lock their car to the garage floor, this idea struck me when the datsun down the road got stolen,

It's just online - you can log in from anywhere - when you log in and 'poll' the system it pings your phone and returns a map like this:
Image

Accuracy is not down to house or even street level, more neighbourhood level really, it's better in the city where there's more cell towers and the accuracy of triangulation is better.

To give you an idea of accuracy, the car was actually located at the end of Levy Street at the top of the picture, maybe about 200m away. On other pings when the car was in the same location, it showed it as about 600m to the west instead. So it's not going to let you knock on someone's door but it will let you know to within 10-20 streets where it is.

As i said, it's not perfect but for very little investment (in comparison to gps and subscription products), it's a security blanket and a little piece of mind.

have you tried the car in same spot and tried the search over and over to get a variation on its range, are the pings the amount of times you check where the thing is, you could be getting somewhere,

and still 10 streets ain't that bad, if you had a keyless entry system and as long as there is a battery in the car or the system had a back up battery all you need to do is walk around clicking that thing and you might find it, you would have to make a move pretty fast

Yep, the car was static for 3 months and for the first few weeks it always came back with the location 600m to the west and then for the 3 or 4 searches that i did later it came up with the result like above, about 200m to the south.

So it only ever returned 2 locations and i tried it maybe 9 times in total over the 3 months.

Haven't really used it since as it was purely for the purpose of safeguarding it when i was in the UK. It's now safely locked up 99% of the time but i do intend on fitting it all properly sometime soon.
