there was two boxes, taped together. inside the boxes the lights were wrapped in bubble wrap (not heaps but as much as i would have put if i was sending), so i'd say yeah, but no 'fragile' stickers, i wonder if it cost's more to put a fragile sticker on it?

so the bloke sent me a new light, really good service, and then when i got home from work tonight the power went off half way through my shower  , so i thought can't watch telly, can't check ausmini, (among other things you use the net for) so i thought i know i'll set up a torch and put the lights in.
Bloody brilliant, sooo much more light, i will have to go for a night drive soon to really see the difference, but in the garage it looks good.
Only thing is the rim that the lens is held in by on the new lights is slightly thinner than the rim of the old lucas ones, any one got any bright ideas about something to take up the slack, it's maybe a millimetre or so, but i don't really want the things bumping and rattling around in there. How hot do the lights get? Maybe a few pieces of folded up material?
let me know, and thanks you've all been really helpful.

p.s. are the lucas lights worth hanging onto or should i just chuck em?

The Lucas ones aren't really worth anything I don't think. I have a set spare. But when people hit another car they smash need a replacement etc. Eventually they'll be worth more (like anything else that is old), so at the moment I'd just hang onto them. As I don't think you'll get much money for them at all.

Ok so i hang on to them for a bit, ta.

New lights are great but went for the night drive to the country to test light, and i think tho they might work well, they don't do much good pointing at the ground. i think i'll adjust them tomorrow, any suggestions? garage? or back the car onto the street and do it there?

let me know your experiences

well you can park your car facing a wall and use a screwdriver to adjust them i think.

or take them to a garage, it shouldnt cost much.

What I usually do to get a rough starting point is:

Park on a flat surface with the flat area extending ten feet past the front of the car.

Get a stick/board and stand it on the ground at the front of the car and mark the height of the centre of the headlight glass on it

Move the stick/board to about 10 feet in front of the light and adjust the light until the top of the low beam bright spot is at the mark

as you move the stck closer to the light, the top of the bright spot should slowly rise up the stick a little bit - if it doesn't then the light is adjusted too high

You can the do fine adjusting later when you park on a quiet dark straight road. Use the high beams to make left/right adjustments because the low beam may shift to the left to light the shoulder of the road, but concentrate more on the low beam for the up/down adjustments, because if you get this right then the geometry of the light should make the high beam correct too - and you won't get pulled over because your low beam is out of focus and "dazzling" oncoming plods

That 1mm of slack is pretty common for generic aftermarket lights. You may find you can gently adjust the three tabs that locate the light to make the fit tighter, just be careful as they are easy to break. Other than that you could stick something around the tabs to take up the slack.

As for my headlight adjustment, my headlights appear to have macular degeneration as no matter what it seems to have a blind spot in the middle! That may be because I'm using two different brands of H4 light though, or I'm just crap at headlight adjustment.

Have you tried swapping the lights over left to right?

That's probably a good idea just to see what difference it makes. Having two different brand lights doesn't help though as you can see just by looking at them that they spread/focus the light very differently. In fact, the cheaper one seems to be better!

Ta lads i might give it a shot tonight, how hot do you reckon the lights get? if i put some cotton between the glass and the brace that holds the light in, is it likely to catch fire?

No it won't get that hot - but remember it will be open to the elements (rain, roadspray, heat, etc) so cotton may not be the best choice. How about cutting up an aluminium can?

'Anton' says that the gap is a common problem, what have other people used? or does it really matter should i just forget abut it?

maybe some gasket material??? prolly a bit of overkill?
