Just had a real good look at my blue 850 engine - there is green under the paint on the breather pipe and under the paint on the tappet covers - amazing how the flash has shown up the green under the blue on the block - I swear that you cannot see the green in normal light  But the blue looks original it has been on the engine a long time and was sprayed on as it is in all sorts of tight places - sort of matches the Blue car :?

I wonder if the very first owner was an arty person who believed the saying "blue and green should never be seen unless there is another colour in between" and had the donk painted to match the rest of the car 8)

My 1098 is a remote change - wonder if this is where the change in colour happened = from remote to rod. :?:

Early 1098 Clubby was basically Mini-K engine/transmission in a Clubby body.
Around 1974 they went from remote to to rodchange but kept the 1098. The one I had with rodchange (Brad's) was BLACK.

Interesting Doc. I've got the 1098 out of the car at the moment and there is definitely a layer of gold paint under the green, although no sign of any on the transmission. As this a 72 car it holds up to your comments. No sign of any blue anywhere. I don't think the motor has been out of the car previously - from what I can tell looking at the bolt heads etc. although I have no definitive proof of this and the green looks factory applied.

On the mk2 cooper s is it only the engine block that is green ?

Is the flywheel cover and cylinder head and gearbox also green or are any of these NOT painted ?

Does anyone have the colour code for the paint for the engine and the cooper s rims ?

is the switch panel the same colour as the rims ?

Cheers

Mk1 and Mk2 Cooper S powerplants were painted originally dark Green in England , on arrival in Australia they were painted a Metallic Light green , supplied by Berger Paints , code CP8689-Metallic Green . The whole unit was painted this colour , except the Radiator , Fan , Distributor , Coil , and Generator/Alternator. I don't think this colour is available now, but some of the Mini parts suppliers , such as Mini King , sell something that is a close match . The wheels and switch panel were painted Silver Birch , a Dulux colour ...

Does anyone know where to obtain the correct (or a close match) engine paint for a 1970 Cooper S, preferably in a spray can?

I know someone who bought some from there a few weeks ago..... it's yet to arrive via post.

That aside, you can get a paint supplier to put it into an aerosol spray can.

Why bother though? Use a compressor and gun to apply it.

Back in the early 70's there wasn't the choice of paints available to the backyard/hobby engine builder (like me). Spray cans were usually from the USA and expensive. The best option was PowerPlus engine enamel which came in a tin so you could brush it on. I know I painted many engines red, black and light blue as these were some of the more common colours. Might explain some of the odd colours you guys are coming across.

Also, you wouldn't find any original paint on a block or head if it has been rebuilt. Those caustic baths take it all off. Better chance on gearbox/transfer case.

Pete

Thanks GT and peterw.

Mini King does have a close match of the metallic light green engine paint in spray cans but is currently waiting for new stock. I have some on order.
