Bugger.

Does it idle OK? What happens if you raise the piston with the lifting pin?

Also try enriching the mixture by turning the jet adjusting nut down while it is running.

pulled the rocker cover and tightened the head bolts and inlet manifold - very little to tighten but off she went - still not great at the top end - but at least it get there

so id ont know if it was the float needle, cleaning the carbie or tightening the head and in let manifold or all of the above -

now to retune the damn thing and try and get it registered

it behaves as it should - air produces revs, fuel produces soot. Its idling OK - far better than before - just a little gutless - so I will fiddle some more

Thanks everybody

Is the fuel bowl vent (little hole behind an ally cover on the fuel inlet on early carb or separate pipe on later carbs) clear?
I have had a similar situation with an early carb, where the vent hole cover was missing and the rubber fuel line was pushed on far enough to block the hole completely.
Lotsa black smoke, chugging and labouring. . .

Buy a can of pressure pack carby cleaner.

Spray it all around the manifold, the carby and even the vaccuum advance one at a time and while the engine is running. If the Revs rise then you still have a leak.

Now I am unflummoxed

I found the main cause. The joint between the exhaust manifiold and the tailpipe was leaking when it got warm, blowing exhuast straight into the ait filter - blocking the bloody thing. No air - no revs. The air filter looked Ok, but wasnt when I tries to get a compressor to blow air through it.

Tightened the exhaust, new air filter and somebodies your uncle.

Thanks again everybody for your help

Unflummoxed was almost the word of the day in December 9, 1856 somewhere.
