If you are hit from behind your weight will be transferred backwards to the rear of the seat , my grandmother had her back broken when they were rear ended in an early Pajero and the seat reclining mechanism failed and fell flat to the rear seat . It's not just about the impact in the direction that the seatbelt will help but the reverse as well if you spin and hit a wall from behind , or get rear ended on the road or track .
