Hey, let me know how this goes. I've often wondered if that was possible, whether you'd need to use tubing guides and if you did, would you need some sort of bearing to assist.

When using the drop bracket though a point that has already been mentioned but is very important is that when changing the angle of the steering colum.

The 2 U bolts holding the steering rack to the body must be loosened to allow the spindle of the rack to move to the correct postition of the now relocated colum spline. If this isnt done you can strip the spline in the colum and guess what you end up?? NO STEERING!!!

You DO need to re-align the spline when using a drop bracket on a STANDARD ISSUE mini steering column... but that wont be necessary in my example.....

Yes, well the idea is to use a twin uni-jointed shaft from the original steering rack location and angle, to the bulkhead / dash.

The first uni-joint would be almost on the floor, with a bearing-supported shaft running up the bulkhead to another uni-joint, then the shaft would run directly out to the driver. The column would be mounted at the "normal" top position to a slotted mount. This would make the rack adjustable in height using the top uni-joint as a pivot point.....

Obviously, the uni-joints cant be too angular as this can make the joints wear excessively.

If only i could be bothered getting out of bed to do it.......

well, looking at the steering column, the first uni joint would be fairly gentle anyway and if you can undo the Ubolts to swivel the steering rack to lower the steering column, couldn't you also slightly swivel the rack up to improve that joint if necessary?
They would be excessive unions. I was looking at the other half's Nissan last night and at the variable tilt steering mechanism. Really as long as the first unijoint places no undue strain on the splines

There are 4 bolts which should be losened off when adjusting the angle of your wheel, or adding a steering column drop bracket. There are two about 4cm to the left of the steering colum - on the floor below the clutch pedal, and another two in the same location (mirrored) in the passenger side footwell. Don't forget to nip them up again after the bracket is lowered.
Before tightening the lower bracket bolt, check that your indicator arm still cancels too. If not, slide the outer sleeve of the steering column towards the steering wheel to re-engage cancelling lugs. The outer sleeve can also be rotated slightly to adjust when they cancel.

You can find some pics here: http://www.minifinity.com/index.php?nam ... ic&t=11206

I have often wondered why the lowering bracket exists.
I would have thought it would have made getting in and out of the car difficult and put the wheel in the way of your knees.
Do people not find it difficult?

Not unless you have the original bus style steering wheel.
I have a 14" wheel with the bracket, but it's certainly not right down. At least you can adjust it to suit.

Whats the effect of the chrome bracket on the famous "bending column in a head-on" qaulity of the mini steering column? Would it stop it from bending?

It doesn't enhance that feature, but we're only talking a couple of degrees here so it will still bend forward.
we had one in the 850 back in `65, column had about a 30* bend in after we hit the %%$#* tree...
