Pfft. So got box of parts from Mini spares. New rotor button, dizzy cap and leads. Got some jumper leads to start the now very flat battery and what do you know, it started (was a bit rough). Ran for a couple of minutes, I touched the accellorater and then it died. :x F#%ing Lucas piece of S&%t.

I checked the coil and it is getting plenty of volts to it. So I don't think this is the issue.
Incidentally I fitted a GT40R coil that states "use to replace all standard coils fitted with ballast resistors."

Oh well tomorrow's project.

So now I think I will check
Quote:
check the ignition control box.
then the throttle position switch

Incidentally where are these and what do they look like :?:

Well, checked the fuel line and I could already hear the fuel pump, so didn't think it was that. But I checked that fuel was getting to the engine, and it appears to be pumping through well. Still won't start though. :x All that's left is trying the various connectors and spraying with a bit of WD40. :x :x :x

Well did all that. Checked for spark and not getting any spark when the engine is crankin, but getting current to the coil. So going back to what controls the spark the coil.

Does anyone have an electrical schematic for an SPi Rover. Someone here kindly pointed me in the direction of an MPi one, but as they don't have a distributor, they are a bit different.

Thanks for everyones help in this.

the spark is controlled by the ECU. turn the ignition on and there is current at the coil, the ECU than pulls it to ground as needed.
so you don't get any spark and there is no fuel injected? than check the crankshaft sensor again. if it doesn't tell the ECU that the engine is turning over nothing will happen, no spark, no fuel

MEMS 1.3 or MEMS 1.6 (one or two connectors at the ECU)?

How do I check the crank angle sensor?
As I tried again and spark is intermittent,

Thanks.

as normal person you can only look for corroded connector, broken wires or in rare cases cracked sensor.
with a multimeter you can check for an AC voltage
with an oszilloscope you could check the full wave

Well finally got it sorted. Got an auto electrician who didn't runaway when I showed him under the bonnet.

He charged the battery and it started 1st time. Not happy Jan!

He said it was probably the immobilizer with the battery being so flat. I said that's great but this doesn't explain the original issue that it will start and when I rev the motor it dies, or why i get +ve charge on the -ve side of the coil, and wouldn't you know it, as he put his hand on the air con condenser it died... Turned out to be a frayed wire contacting the condenser. I would have been there for days trying to find that. Oh well, at least it was a relatively cheap fix, some tape and a cable tie. A bit cheaper than a crank angle sensor. Hopefully that's all it is...

So parts to fix a frayed wire:
New coil
New rotor button
New distributor cap
new leads

... and a whole lot better understanding on how the system works for next time when it stops again on the side of a deserted road (with no internet access  )

I blame the RACV. They told me it was the coil.
