But the filter elements from the UK fit both the Australian and British cartridges don't they? (Except Autos)

I didn't think they could be interchanged. They are the same height, but are otherwise different. And as I was saying before, some of the Purolator type filters are also coming missing the bottom O-ring.
This is the R2180P, this is the British Purolator type filter fitted to the 850, Cooper S and very early Deluxe and Morris 1100...

This is the R2200P, this is the Ryco type filter as fitted to the Deluxe, Morris 1100, Mini K, Clubman, etc...

Notice the big hole in the bottom of the R2180P, you can use it instead of the R2200P but you need the big plate that goes on the bottom of the filter. (on top of the spring)

The Cooper S had a felt cartridge in the Purolator housing, can't recall the p/no. It was supposed to filter better than the paper one and you could wash them out with petrol. Well... we did back then, we were cheapskates...

I've got my purolater filter here (without a plate) can anyone tell me what diameter the purolater oil bowl is for either of the filters? I have no idea if I have the right filter or not for the cooper engine...

I think for ease of servicing I might switch to spin on...

Ive emailed Ryco again advising the problem has not been fixed... They have only had 11 years to sort it out.
