it isn't our fault that stupid mums in 4wds can't drive! i refuse to let them scare me off the road, and long for the day that their insurance and registration is changed to consider the damage they do th the environment, and other people.

Dont mean to thread-jack, but I have the exact same problem now. I'm 19, living at home, work full time, and want something to do on weekends.
The parents really don't want me getting a mini purely for its safety aspects. They keep saying "buy a new mini" and I'm always saying "It's not the same!"
Anway, I've somehow got my dad into the idea of a rover, for the slightly better safety (actually, think the swing came when he found out they have aircon) and things are looking better for me since joining a club, they know how serious I'm getting, and will have to give in eventually.
If you're backing the car finacially, and they know how much you want one, they should give eventually. That and, tell them it's mini or motorbike!

I said Mum Dad I am either getting a mini or a motorbike, they were damn sure I'd kill myself on a motorbike so the mini seemed the lesser of the two evils

Because Mini's are smaller, there's less of them to hit - so hopefully the reckless road warriors will miss you!!

As for ecconomy, well, mine costs more to run than anything else I've owned.
But not per kilometer, just per trip - 'cause it's so much fun, I take the long way home!!!

Just ask a few of the youngn's here in this forum how tough a Mini is when you either get run off the road, fall over into a creek or miss a corner and do barrel roll???

Bet willy can tell you all about it......

well,

large cars tend to have so much horse power and are an instant temptation to let it rip..lol
The mini certainly is a temptation to hoon too..but we dont tell our parents

if it comes down to a choice between a new small car and a mini....i would go mini straight away.

An ex of mine managed to drive home one night on a dark road, and Roll her Toyota echo, on a very easy corner.. flipped onto its roof...went thru the safety barrier , down into a gulley.

wiped off most of the top of the car..She survived..just. and apparently due to the cars design....was in intesive care for a while.
BUT,

i say this never would have happened if it was a mini..the lower centre of gravity would have helped her slide arround the corner..

a mini would never have flipped on such a turn..
