I'd suggest holding the hub in a vice (in a careful way) and using a deep dish socket (1 1/2" AF) to undo them. Yes you don't have one etc but I don't think you could do the job any other way. Try supercrap for the socket and wrench (they're usually 3/4"drive).
Found this old thread because one of my ball joints I am struggling to undo, mainly because the hub is awkward to grip in the vice with the drive shaft, cv and disc still in situ.
I might try the suggestion of bolting it into a spate wheel but I'm wondering what is the best and safest way of gripping the hub "in a careful way" as above.
