I've got a 72 Clubby 1100 and a GT. Removed the 2 dial unit and found the white tacho wires there, just plugged into each other. Put one of my spare GT units in, plugged in the white wires and bingo - working tacho. There is also a wire coming from the main part of the circuit - can't remeber exactly where without lookiing - that goes onto the tacho, presumably to get power toi the unit.
BTW, the GT units had speedo to 120mph and tacho red line at 6500 rpm. I think all others were 100mph and 6000 rpm.

In my recent research into using an early Smiths tacho I found their two types of sensing. There are RVI - CURRENT DRIVEN and RVC -VOLTAGE DRIVE TACHO'S. These letters are printed on the front face. RVI's have power going from ignition switch to MALE plug on tacho, then power goes from FEMALE terminal to coil + . If tacho is faulty or needed to be removed ie not fitted these two bullet wires are connected to each other an car runs normally. RVC tachos( which I believe are the later type )have a wire going from the MALE bullet terminal to the coil - side. Both tachos require power in ( spade terminal ) and earth grounding. As on a previous thread the early RVI's don't work well on cars with electronic dizzys. hope this may be of use.
regards Steve

Thanks for that info ELMO

It seems I have a RVI then, it is working OK (well briefly anyway) on my clubman with a pulsar electronic dizzy.

Maybe I will have to watch out for funny behaviour :?
