If you want to talk precision shifts, try a split-window Kombi.

You are lucky if you find any gear, and even luckier if it actually propels you forwards.

FWIW I prefer the early magic wand!

hee hee,,, splittys are virtually no different to the later bays,,, still the basic same shifter assy

MY Kombi engine mounts are now cactus,,,splitting badly & are spreading under power,,,so when i pop wheel stands now the shifter shaft/rod jams in the tube that runs the whole length of the car,,, so i have to back off & wait for the engine to drop to be able to select 2nd gear :-( No fun for me till i fix the mounts & add some torque struts to the box to stop it all lifting under power :-)

Not to mention the great engineering advances made with the M1500/Nomad.

The Leyland bean counters killed off the remote. Still the best, with engine stability as a bonus.

That maybe true, but it's all that we have to work with :?

For the record, half of my own cars are Rod Shift and the half Remote.

Also for the record, I like the Doc and respect his vast knowledge and experience, so please let's not have any fight, fight, fight crap here!

I think it fair to say that both shifters have their good points and bad. Neither system is perfect (they are both a fine piece of british engineering goodness sake!) :D

it's just that the rod shift is better

I'm an engineer and grew up on a farm, I know crap agricultural design when I see it. :P
There are good rod change setups about, but the Mini isn't one of them.
