Steve, try the Google Cached version... It's a long shot, but you can only try! It got me out of trouble when another forum I'm on died just when I was needing to reference a thread...

This post seems a lot shorter than when I read it a week ago. :P Much less controversial - less likely to cause Poeee financial loss in the courts. :)

Hi

I was just going to ask if this problem is any closer to having a solution or is it not going to be worried about now. :?:

I then saw the last reply (before this one), where/how does one find the Google cached version :?:

Cheers
Steve

I've found the problem, I resurrected the 850 register post as a test.

I'll do the rest in one hit as soon as I have a couple of hours to concentrate on it and make sure I don't break it any further - maybe one night this week, but probably on the weekend

Fantastic job. I used to think of myself as a computer guru in certain areas, then downgraded to computer-literate, now I'm like your grandma trying to play Halo. "Which one am I supposed to be?..."

What exactly was the problem? (Don't be shy, there's not much I don't know about MySQL ;) )

not a MySQL problem - it's a data problem... a heap of the data for the mini chat topics is missing. All the posts are there, but the topics that define which thread a post belongs to isn't there. When you link to a post, it looks for the topic first, which is why the search is funny, it seems to find the posts, but can't view the topics

all I need to do is re-populate the topic table with the missing topics, which I can rebuild from the post table

That's why I thought it might have been a MySQL fubar. If the tables are using the MyISAM engine then it's easy for data to evaporate like this.. it's data security is shocking. If it's InnoDB then it's much less likely that MySQL has farted, especially if the schema is defined with foreign keys.

I couldn't count the number of times I've had corruption and data loss in MyISAM tables.. I won't use anything but Inno in MySQL these days.

Out of interest, what is the extent of the Ausmini database? Given the number of times we've had major data loss in the past few years it might be worth setting up an INSERT/UPDATE-only replicant on another host somewhere, so we have something to fall back to (and good insurance against possible malicious DELETEs...)
