It Continues...

Well, have had bits n pieces on and off over the week, and various jobs are popping up do be done. I can do myself lukily.

Some new wiring under the bonnet
Fix petrol gauge
Change seats for roadworthy
Etc, Etc.

The current issue is the brakes. The handbrake didn't work at all when I got it, and after a short time had a tempory fix, but it still isn't very strong and after a trip round the block resulted in one very, very, very hot drum and one very cold one on the back. That tells me a pad is rubbing while the car is driving, and the other isn't doing jack.

Now I hardly know the most about drum brakes, and had a quote of up to $800 to get them as good as possible. I think that was a maximum price, covering all new pads, adjustments and cylinders if needed. This was from a mini place, so should know what they're doing.

What would you people do? Spend $800 on perfect drums, or shell out a bit more for discs?

The cars last passed a roadworthy was at most 2 years ago when the previous owner took delivery. Could they have deteriorated that much in that time, considering the car was only used weekly?

Thanks.

think your rear drums need adjusting,, just jack it up at the back, get a spanner on the adjuster and turn until the pad touches the drum, do both sides the same.... then test.
Dont spend $800 on them,, rip off.

Pads and cylinders will cost you under $100 for the rears.

I spent a couple of hours with the car on stands playing around, but couldn't get anything to work.
How thick are the pads when new?
They are around 4mm at the thinnest point, but that includes the steel they are mounted on.

id take the rear pads off and get some new ones in there.. check the fronts too, if the rears are gone then the fronts most probably are to. As i said pads are not dear, last time i got some the lot for 4 wheels was under $150.

When you put the new ones on make sure you adjust them in so the drum will go on, then adjust out again till they hit.

Would the local brake specialists be able to help me out as good as a mini place?

If everything is set up and working correctly, braking systems are pretty simple - BUT - there are lots of little things that can be wrong and make them real mongrels to try and get working efficiently. Like shoes on upside down, seized adjusters and handbrake quadrants, sqashed pipes from overtightened unions and stop lamp switches, - the list goes on (I won't even start on some of the tricks available to help diagnose/fix faults).

If you want, I'll donate some time to you on the weekend to help you to try and sort them out. Just name the day and place. I'm confident that we can come in well under that price.

Thanks John.
I'll take a reincheck on that for now, I'll try and get hold of the new parts I need through repco or whatever, that way I know I won't have another headache in a couple of months. I have about 4 different mini service manuals, so I'll try again myself maybe later.
It'll save me cash in the future if I can do it myself.
I still have to contact the guy who built the car 3 years ago and find out if it's just the engine he swapped, or the whole subframe with brakes, not that it'll make too much difference.
