Just a general question, what do the numerals 1/ and the /3 at the begining and end of the colour on the ID plate mean?

ie: 1/SHADOW BLUE/3 I notice the numerals are present on all the ID plates but have never been sure of their meaning.

On the "Clubman" Racer, the numbers are the same... 12995

Also, what does the number after the build date signify...12/74-49 ??

The first number is the paint type and the end number is the manufacturer see below

I wouldn't worry too much, I think they sometimes moved shells off the side of the line if it needed rectification and had to do a couple of laps of the paint shop.

49th week of the year.
They only introduced the week code in 74 and dropped it at the end of the year.

Thats what I was thinking but if the shell sat off the line the gap between the body no and the car no. would increase not decrease.

Anyhow there probably is a logical explanation. They may have issued a Car number out of sequence for some reason.

We have to keep in mind these numbers, esp the body number, were for the most part simply to aid the factory to keep track of the cars while they built them.

They wouldn't have expected us to be dissecting their hidden meanings, angles and positions 40-50 years later.

im still trying to work out exactly what you mean by 500, which numbers are you getting 500 less from?

The owner spoke to the RTA and they have said the car seems to be fine.. they cant recall this vehicle ever being reported as stolen or written off, but i will try and go look at the car again this weekend to be sure and to recheck some rust spots.

Joe, there are 2 numbers stamped on the car- the `chassis/body number', also shown on the ID plate, and the `car number' which was an internal numbering system used during manufacture. The difference between these numbers is supposed to be ~500, but it's not set in concrete- for various reasons (panel damage on production line, repainting of roof, etc) it can be a fair way out. I've seen one car (a legit Mk2 S)- where the difference was about 350, not 500.

On later roundies, Mk2 S etc from 1969-71, the car number is stamped in the rain channel above the wiper motor.

You will be looking to find M205 16205 on the rad shroud or a similar number.

I'd go with the laps around the factory for variable numbers, but honestly havent come across this before. But with BMC/BLMC we have learnt anything is possible.

The issue here without the rad no. is stolen and re-badged? While anything is possible its unlikely someone has taken the trouble to re-badge a Deluxe. Even if the numbers stack up it remains vaguely possible to cut and shunt a firewall and shroud, but then who will grind it all away and repaint if green, then repaint the shell blue. The colour thing will probably remain a mystery.

All the best

It might be as simple as original blue - repainted green - repainted current blue, but the job was only half done leaving the engine bay.
