Hi Greg,

I've been getting some picks over the weekend.

Here is a pic of the car as per the original log book. Still had QLD rego!

So...did it start life as an imported English Austin Cooper 1071S :?:

Hmmm debatable. Will have a lot more info on the pre-Jack history of the cars soon I hope. My car has an Austin Cooper S ID and plate but it isnt an Austin shell, and it is definitely Jacks original shell. (all his ahem, improvements, are still there)
Jack did have a way of convincing the powers that be that the cars were legit. A bit like the forged FIA paperwork that allowed my Group C car to run with some subtle mods. Funny thing is that because CAMS allowed the car to run with the mods, when they finally realised it was too late. The car now must run "as it was" if it were run in historics, which would make it rather competitive. The Cert of Desc has all these mods listed.

I once had a long time Appendix J racer turn his nose up at my car when he heard it was ex Jack Lacey. After inspecting my car closely he said I was lucky that he sold it before he "made it more competitive"!!

Something along the lines of Queenslanders banana bending the rules! :)

Mick, In answer to your question about my car starting as a 1071 I am not sure.

The current config is definately not as the shell is early Aussie 850 with the small slots IN the drain hole and not the English cut out slots that an imported Austin should have.

It is hard to see from the photos if it is a different shell or not. My car has been fitted with a right hand fuel tank at some point but hard to say if it is original but I doubt it.

If anyone has information on the various race cars then it is Max Stahl who was the editor and owner of "Racing Car News" until it was sold to the daughter of along time motor journalist whose name I simply cant bring to mind. The one who wrote as Romsey Quint.

Max is still around and publishing a broadsheet publication about motorsports. He lives on the Central/Mid North Coast of NSW now and I know he has archives of all his publications.

He also has a very good memory and was deeply involved in the Appeendix J Association until the mid to late 1980s.

I did have both his telephone number and email until a fairly recent hard disk crash.

A Geriatic synapse happened - a rare event - It was Bill Tuckey and it was his daughter Liz >> who took over Racing Car News - until it finally folded.

Hey Mike...ALL RCNs are available for viewing/copying at the National Library in Can'tberra...FYI Cheers, Mick

Thanks Anth...my suggestion was based purely on the 1071 number plate...a lot of trouble to go to if it was just a transplant into an Aussie 850...don't ya think?? But then again, different times and things were a lot easier and cheaper to achieve back then :D

Its amazing whats floating around in peoples heads though. Often the info you are looking for isnt in print but hidden in the grey matter. Had an amazing chat with a retired racer last night, who I have talked to many times before. I asked the right questions and jogged his memory on a car I have been searching for. The way Watto was heading with interviewing these blokes (and women) in TME in my opinion is priceless. Hopefully it can be kept up in the new mag because these folks wont be around for ever and their knowledge will soon be lost.

You cant beat going straight to the horses mouth. I may use that contact shortly, thanks.
