To get the embossed look I am going to try and cut around the old embossed rosette that's already on my seat buckle and then put the repro one over the top.

What would be needed to create a little press that has the logo engraved on one flat plate and embossed on the other so they fit together? Would a computer aided cutter do that? Or is it a Dremel job?

I can get nickel silver or brass etching done. I do this for my Railway hobby. Might be onto something here. Would need to arrange a CAD Drawing of what we want. I'm not sure how it would go in the vinyl material. Really needs to be a harder compound like the original.

You could make a little press like that fairly easily with a 3d printer.

Press would work but you need a tin foil type material that can be printed first.

There are replica ford ones available. (Ford used the same belts as BMC) so it can be done.

I tried to get the buckle sticker in best condition to photograph so as to show up the embossing. There's a saw-tooth design around the outer edge of the inner black circle, a bit like flames around the sun. I'm guessing it's a somewhat crude attempt to mimic the BMC rosette ribbon 'petals'. The letters B, M & C are also raised slightly, as is the rosette ribbon tail at bottom right.

I've included a Leyland buckle with the swirl image. The embossing follows the black outline of the swirl and letter L.

I've just been speaking to James at Autoluxe Vintage as I remembered he restores seat belts. I've purchased from him in the past. He works from home and mainly concentrates on Ford and Holden stuff, but will do BMC and Leyland belts. He uses the original authentic style ribbed webbing, not the smooth webbing most other seat belt restorers use. He's in East Malvern (suburban Melbourne) just a few kilometers from me.

We chatted about having the buckle stickers remade. He gave me the contact details for a company he highly recommended and who he had used in the past - Briter Australia. He did say it may be fairly expensive given a relatively small run and the need to make tooling for the embossing.

I also spoke to a company today called "Graphix unlimited". They are a company that do many Holden Ford and Valiant stickers as well as as many high quality motoring stickers. They do a embossed button for the same buckle that was used in Falcons eg GT etc.

He said the stickers need to be screen printed on a foil then given a clear layer to protect the ink. They are then embossed with a press. He said for small run would be expensive because of the tooling for the press. He said there were other alternatives such as layering under the sticker. He said if I sent him a pic he would see what he thought.

I would still like to see what it would look like if the embossing was graphically added to the printed sticker to give the illusion it is raised.

Would someone with some graphic skills like to give that a go.

I've just ordered a few sets of Ian's stickers as the embossing discussion may not lead anywhere. I also don't want Ian to be left with excess stock of his stickers after all the effort he's gone to and cost he's incurred on behalf of Ausmini members. I might have a play with one sticker to see if hand embossing with a suitable tool is possible.

Phil - good idea re the shadow printing to mimic embossing.

+1 Winnabbey

I reckon for all but the most diehard, that once the sticker is in you won't look at it again. They look great in my buckles, and I'd do it again without.

This was a bit of an experiment but it seemed to work.

I used a scalpel and cut out the shape of the rosette with the centre empty, I used a printed photo of a good one scaled to size for the outline. It was actually a little bulky but it's not easy to cut so small by hand.

I then worked out where it would sit on metal plate in the buckle and glued it with paper glue.

Then placed the sticker on top, gave it a good rub and this is how it came out.

I was thinking maybe if the outline was accurately drawn the right size and very carefully cut out you might get a better result. If you had the right shape cut very finely and accurately out of paper (laser cut??) I reckon it would look like a bought one.

When I get a chance I'll do another and see if I can improve on it.
