Exactly. It used to be a case.of no matter who you were there was a possibility of getting mixed up with back markers/privateers, mechanical issues (not caused by crashing), and general bad luck. So winning wasn't just having the quickest car, it was about luck, great driving and excellent prep.
Now they only have issues due to having driver errors.

I do still watch it, and I enjoy Bathurst, but there is a lack of competition. Next year will add some spice with Mercedes & Nissan involved. I'll still probably support Ford though :P

The last laps of Bathurst were great this year. The driving of Reynolds was exciting. Car sliding around, right on whincups bumper. whincup is basically the most boring driver in V8SC racing.

Privateers, although the big teams whinged about being held up, were great to watch - particularly for the David-and-Goliath feel that they brought (although I'll admit the crashes they were usually involved in also brought excitement, I'd rather see them do well). I thought the Shannons entry did great this year to finish, something I hoped but didn't expect would happen (although I think they were a couple of laps down). It's a shame backmarkers don't get a lot of coverage though - I guess it makes having privateers a bit pointless when the coverage centres on the top 5 for 90% of the race :?

Reynolds' drive was great :D Not often I don't go for neither car but still find my heart jumping out of my chest at each corner  But 888 have definately made the sport clinical - whilst it's nice to see a high level of professionalism, I watch a round of the BTCC and wonder why the V8's can't have the same level of excitement?! Maybe the cars are too big  they need to get minis back up there again :D

A few years ago I went up for the saturday (got a free pass through a family friend). The V8's were great, and loud, but the most exciting part was watching A bunch of XY falcons belt down conrod and try and stop in time for the chase lap after lap  :D Not the fastest cars out there, but when you're a spectator, you don't need them to be

I almost bought a drive in a Commodore in 1997. I was offered a seat for somewhere between $5000 and $7000. I probably should have done it.

Just wanted to say, yours is a cool story. Was that really the price of a drive in a V8 touring car/SC (obviously you could also drive)

That was the price back then. Some blokes would ask $15,000 to $20,000 for a quicker car. But anything from $5000 was available if you could drive good enough.
I would have driven a fairly ordinary car and probably provided about half the pit crew for my $7000. The car I was offered did finish the race so it would have been good value at the time. (provided I didn't park it up a fence!)

But all that was years ago, I'm old enough to remember when Russell Ingall was older than me. (he is now a year younger than me!)

Well 20k would get you there in a ute... Not to win though..

Looking at over 100k to pay your way in these days and you wouldn't get a look in at anywhere up the pointy end
