I honestly don't understand the kudos/importance that gets attached to engine numbers, given they are so easily tampered with.

It's important over here due to our convict heritage, the gummint still thinks we're all villains. That's why they insist the numbers are stamped on instead having a silly alloy tag.
Yes they can be tampered with, but it's quite easy to detect what the numbers were, even if decked a bit. As the fuzz know.

Too true, I forget what it is but you use a chemical (an acid I think) to paint over where you think the engine number should be. It reacts with the oxidisation present in the surface from where the number was printed.

Magically the number reappears. Should be done with every car you buy, might be surprised what's hiding under the bonnet of your one owner, fully genuine documented Bathurst cooper s :p

The Police came out to Oran Park in the early 90's and ran a check on the chassis numbers on all the HQ Holdens racing that day (about 45 of them!) They removed the paint from the chassis with some sort of acid and then took photos of the results.
I just stood next to my car shaking a can of black spray paint and when the cop finished I gave him the can and told him to repair the damage! He was not impressed.

But do you not need an engine no for rego???? Pretty sure they check mine.... It does say that the *original* number is missing.... I wonder if there is a number or whether this has something to do with the lack of rego??

Cheers, Ian

Yes you need an engine number for rego (in NSW) but these days unlike old, they never check mine during annual pink slip inspection.
They are more interested in the month/year stamped on the compliance plate (if fitted), because there's a spot on the form they have to fill in.

Of course if you change the engine you need to get that verified and rego updated via a blue slip check, but I bet many people don't bother.

For your information I have just had an abusive phone call (5:00 pm Sunday 14 October 2102) from the advertiser of this vehicle telling me and all the members on AusMini forum to mind our own business.
he has no intention of changing the reflect the correct identity of the vehicle and therefore some poor unfortunate is going to get stung in a big way
Bastard.

Haha what an idiot. So if he's reading this, is he a member?

I hate people who lie about cars. If it's a good replica people will still pay decent money

so,,, it`s a mini K,,, not an "S"

simple as that

what`s the problem then?

he`s finally admitted after people on e-bay told him that it has a Mini-K body so that`s that

it`s a mini K

Old rule of thumb: a good S replica is worth 50% of what a real one is, IF it has all the S gear fitted. IF it's properly sold as a replica.
