The other thing that happens is the valve guide grabs the valve midway thru its stroke

The valve stops the energy has to go some where when the piston hits the valve

Unfortunatly i have been there

If using bronze guides, always ream them after fitting. Unfortunately the manganese bronze ones tend to shrink in after a few heat cycles, even when doing this.
I prefer K-liners put in the original iron guides, but they are not cheap to get fitted.
Also it's a bad idea to put seals on the exhausts with bronze guides or K-liners. Without lube they can seize up.

Thanks for the input everyone.
The setup certainly could have been better which will be revisited in due course. The old sintered rockers have been re-fitted and all is well.

The failure occurred over a 5 min timeframe starting with a slight ticking noise which grew steadily louder untill the engine was running on three cylinders.
I am fairly sure a combination of incorrect geometry and 'near' coil binding along with a casting/material fault was the culprit.
The shaft is clean with no sign of nipping and well lubricated.

I was more interested in confirming that the rocker was in fact cast and not forged as advertised.
I'll forward it back to the UK for their review.

@MrM,

There is a thread here somewhere in which I documented the problems I had getting miniDave's new 1.5 so-called `forged' set somewhere near correct.
Its lift figures as received were all over the place, due partly to all 8 new adjusters being bent.

[edit] see http://www.ausmini.com/forums/viewtopic ... c&start=30

Scroll down the page a bit.

I did note those details and found that the nut to rocker seating on my set was poor which was rectified prior to installation.

The adjusters were however straight and fitted OK without too much slop but there was certainly room for improvement.

Just to be clear on this, 'Forged' is forged and not 'Cast' with forged pads. Oui?
The original Hi-lift 1.5 rockers were a 'forged' item unlike these?

Cheers.

Mais oui, that is correct. Minispares original 1.5s (like in my 1360) were forged STEEL but these are cast IRON, including the pads. This cast iron rocker is hardened on the pads, cast iron has a very high carbon content. However, it has very poor tensile strength compared to even mild steel.

Note that cast iron has been successfully used for rockers in other motors, for example the old Toyota Corolla K series.

How have you gone with your engine builder and the med rocker set?

Apologies motor should be getting installed this week, 1330cc made over 130hp very happy with the results tuned on graham Russell's dyno, unfortunately l didn't get the opportunity to witness this though .

Med postage for order of roller rockers, pushrods, timing gear, starter motor, radiator was $220 aud
