Completely agree Morris 1100,

I assume that it was passed off at some stage as an "S".

Just wonder why they went to the embuggerance of pulling the engine out, just to put the plate on.

very strange.

The production codes and YDO number should match. YDO means Australian Design Office and the Y is used to distinguish it from ADO for Austin Design Office to avoid the confusion that would occur if both used ADO. The Y is also often used to identify Australian designed or modified parts eg AYA xxxx etc. There is another school of thought that the D means Drawing. I don't know which one is correct.
The YDO number for Australian Cooper cars is YDO 6. The production code is M2 06 stamped on the radiator surround. Sometimes it is stamped inside a circle.
YDO 23 is for the Clubman GT. The M2 23 and the body number is stamped on the firewall adjacent to the clutch master cylinder.
One of the mini/BMC/Leyland sites has a list of the YDO numbers which I can't find right now.
