Yep, you can add a cheap catch can between the breather and the PCV. I have one, it's sitting in the Weber box in my car. Fits nicely (given I've twin HS2's). Does a great job of keeping mayo out of the engine. :)

I have the Mini Mania fuel pump breather. The path for gas flow is out, back 180º, then 90º to get out of the breather and into the barb/hose. Now that I have a tacho, I seem to rev the car harder. Meaning, beyond 4k. And yes, if I go over 4,500, it does pump oil into the breather hose, then into the catch can. But I don't get oil into the PCV, or the inlet manifold. I've pushed some stainless steel wool down the breather hose as a droplet breaker, it's made some impact, but I still get some oil in the catch can. That said, the oil's not making it into the engine, so it's not the worst possible situation. And it's easy to keep it below 4,500rpm (especially with a 3.1 diff!).

Am I right by thinking that the side I have marked with M goes to the manifold?

Also, should I be able to see straight through this valve? At the moment I can, but that doesn't seem right.

I took the hose off mine just now for a look.
No, not a plain bore, there should be a spring loaded ball valve or something inside it. If you poke a small drill or screwdriver in the RH end it should move & spring back.
Yes it is mounted round the right way.

Ok, thanks doc, it seems my valve may be dodgy.

I can look straight through it. In fact, I could poke a screwdriver straight through.

I guess that explains why my engine is surging.

Had time to go pick up a new PCV valve this morning. What a difference it has made. I have no smell in the cabin at all now.
Thanks to everyone for their help and advice and a big thanks to Phil for the take off point for the manifold.

I highly recommend this easy fix for anyone who has their breathers plumbed to the atmosphere.
