Drilled the holes 25mm from floor and 30mm from seam worked out pretty well for captive nut and plate.

If you cross the buckles it will work better and not squeeze the passengers, plug the left belt into the right buckle and vice versa. That is how the factory did it, they even used differently shaped tongues and catches so that it would only work that way.

The whole reason for the thread was to answer a question about a 71 HQ for some other bloke. Some threads take on a life of there own.

Doc, rovers have the front belts mounted in the rear companion boxes. I have a chunk out of a rover shell and I can't see and more spot welds holding it in or any other structural difference. There is a mounting bracket welded inside the box for the retractor.

That may well be so; but it was years ago, I had never seen a Rover shell and it looked dodgy as at the time. No captive nut, they just drilled a hole and stuck a bolt & nut in it.
Late Oz Clubbies have the front belt in the pocket, but it has a proper nut welded to the inner sill, which is thicker than the flimsy pocket.

Yep Ill tell my mate with the 71 HQ GTS Coupe to just keep on searching for the correct belts and buckles for the rear seats.
