This one has a 1275 engine from a non Mini. That knocks the "original" down a few rungs.

Does anyone actually have a genuine and original Morris Cooper S... I'm guessing no!
All... other than one locked in a shed for 50 years will have a replacement component or more, so are they genuine original?
As long as people are aware of the not so original details, the engine number is different (but the engine is a correct 1275cc Cooper S) than in my eye it is still a genuine Cooper S, not original though.
Anyway that's my take on it.

I think we may be surprised just how many genuine Cooper S are still running around with their original engines in them. Yes, they may no longer be 1275cc as they've undergone an engine rebuild necessitating a rebore, but they are still the original block. I know of four off the top of my head that are still on the road on a regular basis and I'm sure there would be many more out there.

There would be a lot without their original engines too. Way back in the `60s & `70s a Cooper S was just another (high priced) Mini- if the motor wore out, many folk just got an exchange reconditioned S motor, from Repco or wherever. Keeping it the original # was far from people's minds.

May be the word that should be used is "Authentic" as some people seem to have a problem with the term original, I use both terms. When it all boils down the Mini community just doesn't want to see someone conned by paying for a racing classic and finding out it was just a shopping trolley. I hope this car is the real deal and as my dear 85 year old dad says "an eye full is worth a thousand ear fulls"

Kevin, I agree with you whole heartedly. I believe there are far more Cooper S out there without the engine that they left the factory with than those that still have their original factory engine for the reasons that you say. Are those cars with a replacement Mk1 or Mk2 Cooper S engine still considered to be a genuine Cooper S? Yes, I believe so.

If the subject car in this thread left the factory as a Cooper S (which the pros can usually identify) and carries a Cooper S engine (which is readily identifiable) then I believe it qualifies as a Cooper S - along with the appropriate tax!

You'd be aware more than most that this is sadly an ongoing issue and I'm sure it won't be laid to rest anytime soon. Start talking about body swaps, half cuts etc etc and we're back to the original can of worms but I'm getting a bit off track!

Cheers
Richard

The problem is when people advertise a car as "genuine Cooper S" or "original Cooper S" when they should just say "Cooper S". (or Deluxe )

This car is now for sale at $12000 from Victor Harbor and Victoria. Would it be a spanner?
Tom was the seller from Vic and had $24500 on it.
The new seller has a weird email address. [email protected]

Looks alright for 12G! Authentic or not.

Maybe just needs an XFEY!

I have a totally restored back to as original as I could using nos parts wherever possible, Marine Blue/White roof, 1967 Mk1 Cooper S with the original engine no. 9FSAY 45084, matching the ID plate, which I've re-sleeved back to the standard 1275 bore. I'm pretty sure there would be quite a few such cars tucked away.
Maybe we could start a poll out of interest?

cheers
John

I just thought that the latest ads were a but fishy. Different seller, no contact details and a $12500 price cut. I bet if you send an email the reply will be to transfer a $1000 deposit. I am not saying anything bad about the car. From what I understand is this car is genuine and just needs an S engine.

There is hardly a week goes by without another ad appearing on one of the online selling forums for a Cooper or Cooper S which is not it is made out to be. Todays example which is "one owner for the last 30 years" does not have the correct build plate relying on a Victorian police number and fitted with a no standard engine, 12Ya/Ta/H but according to the ad is "rare and original". The ad on Ebay is http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Morris-Mini- ... 3cf8ee2502

People need to be made aware of such cars for the asking price is not warrented by the actual description.

We should have on this forum a list of the fakes advertised such that people can refer to the same if contemplating a purchase.
