ok i can see this is going nowhere with all the people saying they have cars that will do xxx amount of speed.
Put in a GPS and lets start by gettin proof then we will knock 20% off for running on dry salt beds (tyre drag etc) and we will see how easy it would be to beat the land speed record or see if we can get close to it.

Im in no problem as im have been getting my crew together for sometime and rreally keen is the correct words iw ould say im just trying to get more info.

I agree it is not that easy to beat the record if it was every body would do it ,but it would be fun to have a go and see exactly how hard it is

I hope you will keep me informed for the mag Jai. This is something we could really get behind.

Oh, and I don't think a speed record has been made at Lake Ayre since Campbell's Blubird. Speed Week is I think at Lake Gairdner, but I'll have to check it out.

I have a Clubby Van with 40.7bhp at the wheels! Is that close enough for you? lol
If a Clubby van is the most aerodynamic, is it more or less so with the trailer? I suppose the extra weight might be a drawback though.

More seriously, can you get suitable tyres - like they use on high speed runs on other cars - in 10" or 13"? What about tyre pressures? I believe they would have to be quite low, as the pressure increases as the temperature rises. So many variables. I saw a film about a bloke on an old Indian motorbike....

Cheers, Watto.

Ill keep you informed as it looks like a car will be ready for next years event as (yes your right) lake gairdner is only 56 days away and i dont think we will get a car ready intime for that event.
I have a team that is really willing and enthusiastic and once we settle on a few minor things (to be sorted out by rules and regulations) were gonna have a go at all four catagories that a mini will fit into as a std production saloon, who knows maybe the following year we can do a modified saloon class.
Lets learn to walk before we runa dn gets all the rules and regulations down before DOn tries to break it againa s he is planning to do one on bonneville late next year.
so the record would be ours for a few months atleast.
all we have to do is go faster.

What are the technical requirements is my question. I am sure if you built a 998 clubman with a really short diff like 2.95 or whatever and 13" tyres you could theoretically get it to quite a big speed on salt flats could you not? if you had infinite road, quite possibly?

But again what are the rules? does it have to be stock or so long as it is a 998cc engine? what is the distance of the 2 runs etc? sounds simple enough in theory :P

Chong, NO, getting more speed is not just a case of fitting a taller diff. It takes BIG HP to go fast (which a 998 doesn't have) .. and a Mini has the aerodynamics of a housebrick once you get past 80MPH or so.

It is a measured mile in each direction, after a big run up. better hope the A series doesn't grenade in the process...

What about body mods? if you made an A series 998 bullet car it would surely be slippery at 200km/h?

chong you have not read all the stuff i have been writing, the body has to stay original.
Kevs right to make big speed you need big power and we all know that that is hard enought with the minis aerodynamics.

Im trying to find out about class breaks and what is allowed more than what is not allowed.

Yes I have but sorry if I missed that part, I sort of had to read through 4 pages, 3 of which were "My balls are bigger than yours" posts

I would love to get involved in a salt record attempt.
Jai, I would suggest to try to get over for the next meeting and see what they do. Find out the logistics of getting a car over (or bring a motor and throw it in a car here) find out about tyres and things.
Come over, buy a Falcodore and drive it to the salt, do a couple of runs and drive it back to the airport and leave it in the carpark!

My guess for tyres would be 145/70/12 buffed with 50psi.
My guess for a diff would be 3.44:1

We need to know more about the drag on the salt.
How low can the car run on the salt?
Undertray? legal or not?

Keep us informed.
