The dyno was a hit, and it's a credit to Bob on the way it was run. 8)

I'm still shattered at having been beaten, I reckon it was reading too HIGH for my runs! :D

We could have retarded your timing...

Yep... agreed.
The dyno attracted LOTS of attention and I think that there may not have been enough to see/do on the day if it wasn't for the dyno.

I would like to say a big thanks to Bob and the MCC for putting on the Dyno day, the turnout was good and well organised (except for the queue jumpers).

It's a pity that the day was spoiled by the lack of cooling fan and many cars have suffered damage as a result (although they don't know it yet).

After Grant had run his car (~108hp) I asked if he had any problems as I expected his car to crack 125 or so, but he said no. Then ultimates car was on and started sounding sick by the third run and was losing power so it looked to me like heat was really becoming an issue. I've seen GTI motors with over 300hp at the flywheel before.

My car only had 2 run power runs before I pulled the pin due to heat. I made some changes to the settings prior to going on to try and reduce the risk but still ended up with the water temp over 100degC, oil over 90 degC and intake air over 70degC while watching from within the car. If I'd have done a 3rd power run, people in front of the dyno would have been sprayed with coolant.

The temps may not seem like much but it was only running 10psi and I've run it at 15psi at Wakefield and never seen more than 40degC intake air before (btw I don't run 15 normally, it's set at 11-12 but I did it as a test and found 1/2 - 1sec slower due to less traction).

I can only summise that the intercooler was acting as a heat collector rather than a cooler as at 7000rpm in 3rd it's normally faced with 140+km/h air not zero!

Still, I don't need excuses as I had the 2nd highest hp Mini on the day (~94) and with an engine that was built almost 10 years ago.

I'm just disappointed that despite all the help from my friends and family over the last week and standing around all day waiting to see it run, they saw me unhappy and really couldn't understand the reason/s why...

Daniel

Daniel, your car is absolutely stunning.
Massive amounts of work gone into it.
It was good to have a read of the small summary about the car, where the rear numberplate belongs.

The power output was amazing. The sound of the engine was even better!

:)

Cheers willy, you should have come and seen me, hardly anyone from ausmini came up except people I already knew, that was the whole idea of going! I didn't get a chance to go through the main display so missed out on heaps.

The number plate thing was a last minute job,

DOZ's number plate wrote:
Engine Spec: 1293cc A-series turbocharged designed & built by D. Osborne, completed December 98.

All work including fabrication performed by D. Osborne except for the following:
- Block Machining/Balancing/Crank grinding (Westend Performance)
- Chrome plating (Blu-chrome and Superchrome)
- Exhaust welding (Not worth a mention)

Special thanks go to:
Family and friends who have helped on this project & John Higgs, Glenn Mead, Graham Russell for their valuable contributions & assistance/inspiration. Also to Karcraft, Mini Classic, Mini Clinic, Mini Cooper Motorsport, Mini Kingdom, Mini Spares (UK) for supporting the Mini community.

Obviously you guys know Graham, he has always had time to explain things and repaired the head where I ported through (pin hole) into the water jacket. His comments after the dyno run were encouraging, "still strong after all these years" and "I've told you blokes hundreds of times not to worry about rolling road figures".

Glenn used to work at Mini Kingdom but now is at Campbelltown (Pm for details) and taught me how to rebuild Mini stuff like gearboxes etc. The first day I met him I was trying to get my car rego'd and they pinged me for the mags (contessa's at the time). We swapped wheels off his Mk3 Cooper S in 1/2hr and the guy at the pits couldn't believe it!

John taught me how to use a micrometer at 12yrs old and as I recall I had to hand file/sand a shim used to adjust the end float of the cam in his Datsun. Absolute genius but too introverted for most.

My Dad bought a towbar for his ute just so I could take it and my g-friends cousin (he owns a 600hp Crumbledore) wanted to come for support and lent me his trailer.

Watching the video it does sound pretty good, didn't sound strong in the car though. The dyno guy is the first guy ever (usually mechanics doing rego checks) not to stall the car.

If they do another dyno day I will definately go, but only if a cooling fan is used otherwise I'll have to get a water/air intercooler which is adding weight for no gain really.

Daniel

I didn't know it was you!
I only realised you were the guy playing on the laptop on the back seat, when I got home and saw your signature and realised you had a green turbo mini!

There's always next time

Agreed, GR is a champion.

Hey all,
yeah bad luck Daniel, you had me worried, i did not even know your car was turboed.
my car got pretty warm too when i took it off the temp was up to 210 (95 100 i think) and the oil pressure was at 45psi so yeah it was hot, i thought i would have got more than 107 and i am sure when i fit an intercooler and replace my stock dizzy with a programable ign it will make more but who cars it was a fun day all in all.

Bob well done mate great work and great fun.

Grant

It's funny how most people don't realise it's turbocharged, a guy at Oran Park said to my Dad "oh look, a race mini and a stock one, he's going to get blown away". You can imagine my Dad laughing when the guy had to eat his words.

Anyway, I didn't think I would have the kind of power yours is putting out, mainly because I've always been conservative to keep it all together and it's never been near a dyno. My project was an engineering exercise more than a power thing & I've only had the head off twice since I built it, once for the porous leak in 99 and again in 04 to fix a bent exhaust valve. I reused the head gasket both times too.

Actually, when I bent the exhaust valve the temp was 230degF on the gauge (water) and running it on 3 cylinders I took 3-5tenths off my lap time  . It takes 3-4 laps to get the water to 210 so you can appreciate the need for a fan in front of the car on the dyno.

I figured yours would be at least 125 at wheels, thats why I asked if anything was wrong after your run. My Dad was saying to me just to up the boost on the first run but after seeing ultimates breaking down I got worried about holing a piston or burning an exhaust valve and went lower.

I don't believe the figure is correct anyway, some of the other ausmini'rs are suggesting a 10% error, this makes yours ~118 which sounds closer based on GR's engine dyno readings.

Cheers

Daniel
