also...

using the term "they're just picking on me coz i'm a wittle p-pwater" is a bit soft isn't it

once you're off your p's it'll be "they're just picking on me coz i'm young"

it's more likely to be

the're picking on you because your driving a car that is ~30 years old and it's quite likely to have things wrong with it..(like mine :( ) that could be a danger to people other drivers

it's my 4 cents now.. :)

I hate to point out the obvious, but cops do judeg on the car's looks too. If your car is clean, looks well looked after and cared for you are less likely to get hassles. If it looks battered you will get hassles.

The thinking is that the guy with the immaculate car is less likely to put up with bad ball joints etc..

I dont quite agree with the "P"plater's not knowing the rules. They have the most recent and up to date common Road Rule knowledge. What they lack is the experience, which will always be the best form of learning. They dont know how to deal with a car in a slide, until they find out what it feels like. Most of us have probably forgotten how to drive properly.

I was an apprentice not too long ago, and it always bugged me that the old farts would'nt accept any advice on how a job could be done. We had been taught many new training techniques, but were ignored in favour of "experience". That experience becomes complacency, and complacency risks serious error. Same situation in a car.

Has anyone here had another written or driving exam since they got their Licences years ago. I got my licence 10 years ago now, and have never even had it suggested to me, that I am due for another driving test.
They've even removed all of the eye test charts from QLD Transport Department sites, on the basis that they are not legally qualified to judge someone's sight.

yep got my motorcycle learners and then licence. includes compulsory stay alive course.

I agree that every driver should be forced to take a defensive driving course, at their own expense, because after all a drivers licence is a priveledge and not a right, plus be examined on their defensive techniques in a practical exam at least every 10 years, if not every five. If everyone has to do it the cost will come down, the facilities will be constructed, the instructors will be paid.

Plus i also think that insurance companies should give a discount on premiums to those of us who regularly practice our driving skills on the track. Hell i got my car sliding all over the place, but not once did i leave the black stuff because i CONTROLLED it :D

those that don't believe that the police pick on P platers are obviously very ignorant (but you know ignorance is bliss right? )

i have friends that have taken their P plates down and then driven home from a night out pissed out of their minds (i dont condone this!!!) and have seen plenty of cops and got not so much as a second look. these same people have driven home with their plates up, not having had any drinks and they've been pulled over.

WD I'm not taking the 'soft option' just explaining the facts.....On the two occassions i've been fined (the previous example and the time my plate had fallen down) i paid the fines and am now into my extended Provisional period....so i am paying the price for my mistakes

now, it is upto the police to use their judgement when handing out these fines, etc, and usually they are a lot less lenient when dealing younger drivers. This is my point, they love to power trip and the softest targets for them are young drivers

Way back when, I rode a Suzuki PE400. Got stopped constantly, and got a ticket nearly every time. Now I'm 37 and ride a Honda CBR600 - never get stopped. Never get stopped in any car, but then there's little point - the car is always legal. Coppers (in NZ at least) aren't stupid, they know where they can get a score - young guys. So what better way to get them back than by being completely legit? It's cheaper, and you'll get a little satisfaction. Belong to a club and make your car look well maintained and know the rules.

Having said all that, I remember what it's like being 18 and have deep sympathy foor people who get stopped by those cops who just have no sense of proportion. Illegal gearknobs? What the f*ck is that all about?

Thommo - I really think you got screwed with the P plate falling down incident, and that souldn't have become the nightmare it turned out to be - I really feel for you on that one. If there was any natural justice in this world, the copper would have had to pay the fine and loose his licence instead for being such a pr*ck.

But that just brings me to the point at hand. These coppers are all [believe it or not] human, but, they do have the power, and they will use it, they are requred to. The P platers collectively as a group do make mistakes, break more rules and kill more of themselves and others than anyone else. This just puts the P plater in the mind of the copper as the one to look out for. The intent is not to harrass but to keep as many of you alive as possible for at least one more day cause going to yet another fatal just makes you sick to the stomach.

What happens when he pulls you over is totally up to you. You can play the game, call him "sir", and if he finds something wrong - thank him for pointing it out because there is so much to remenber when your learning...... or you can give him lip, he will be expecting that [especially after the the little sh*thead they had to deal with just before you came along], and he will have the perfic answer for it [from his point of view]

Yes there will be those coppers that "seam" to have attitude, but most of it is a defense mechanism against what they deal with all the time - the scum of the city. You act human and and civil, you'll find they switch back to real person mode real quick.
