Fairly good report on the Coopers but I believe you'll find the above points not totally correct for Coopers in general.

Westminster carpet - I'm fairly sure it wasn't in any Cooper, they had a short pile carpet (name eludes me at the moment), Westminster was loop pile wasn't it.

Hoodlining was only 2 piece for early Coopers, later ones had "conventional" hoodlining. Interior light moved to side at the same time.

3 piece stainless trims was also only found on early cars, later had the same plastic trim as an S has.

Gearboxes were all 4 speed, only with synchro on 3 (not first)

Cheers
Steve

Well this one has the interior light in the middle by the looks of it.

The westminster was the short pile carded goat hair carpet. Loop pile has a completly different feel to it being more conventional. The modern westminster is tretford. It's the same. It's a little bit thicker as it has a synthetic backing on it now. Otherwise it's much the same.

Hoodlining was only 2 piece for early Coopers, later ones had "conventional" hoodlining. Interior light moved to side at the same time.
I didn't know that..I thought it came in 65..

3 piece stainless trims was also only found on early cars, later had the same plastic trim as an S has.

Was that after 63, I had heard that but thought it was a furphy..

Gearboxes were all 4 speed, only with synchro on 3 (not first)

ah yeah, that's what I meant..

Cheers!

The later one piece roof lining came in late 64, my last 850 had it. And pattern matching sunvisors.

Yep, I had a late 64 850 with one piece headling, windup windows and aussie boot lid - all standard (this may have been called the 'Fleet Pack'?

Should I just take my Cooper down and do a comparison. It still has nearly all the original appointments except for the interior light. For a mid 64 build it also has the 2 piece roof lining. I'm going down the coast tomorrow anyway so may just see if I can have a look at the cars, armed with a camera of course and having taken note of everyones questions, will endeavour to get some answers.

OK, been down the coast and had a gander at the cars on offer. The following is my opinion only as I don't consider myself to be the xpert on all things mini. If I were to be bidding on them, the order of preference is

1. The 850, totally original with I suspect a genuine 37,000 miles on the clock. It was the only one I started and it purred like a kitten. The original rubber floor mats are in almost perfect condition. This one would need very little done to have registered.

Image

All numbers on the compliance agree with both body and engine numbers.

2. The 997 cooper as again, it is all genuine matching numbers but a little away from original. No boot board and centre rear bracket missing.

Image

3. As with the 997, the 998 also has all matching numbers but has had more changes away from original. Also no boot board and one broken bracket.

Image

As a point of interest, note who did servicing on it.

Image

4. The s may not be all that it is cracked up to be. The block has been decked at some stage so I couldn't really check the number against the compliance plate and also the body numbers don't appear to match. The front floor has had some dodgy repairs done at some stage.

However, all cars seem to be relatively rust free and very straight. The 850 came from Tasmania and the other three from NSW and going on a shipping invoice in one of them, they have come from Canberra.

This is just a brief description as I wasn't getting down and dirty in the limited time I had available but feel free to PM with any questions and I will see if I can answer them.

Now it is up to the market to determine the selling price. They are all cars requiring little extensive work and for the right price, would be very nice to own. I value my life so the hands will have to stay away from the keyboard and ebay till auction is over.

Did the body number on the 997 match the plate?

Thats the 998. I just noticed it seems like rust around where the body number would be stamped on the 997. More then likely from brake fluid being spilt. Or some one tampering?

Hi has anyone else had a look at these cars im keen
on the 998 cooper but i live in Tasmania so any more info
on these would be great. Are the 998 coopers harder to find then
the 997 coopers?

Thanks jamie

Pretty sure 997 coopers are much rarer than 998
