Yeah, those broken cranks will cause a vibration.

The bit I can't work out, and maybe I've missed something is that you sold Pearl to get a modern car to drive to and from work and here you are driving a mini van?
It's a clubbie van is it? - more modern than a roundnose. :D

It would be the perfect car for taking your best mates girl for a drive - "accelerate accelerate - it feels so good - Joe I know its cruel to cheat with your best friends girl but that vibration is so gooooooood"

luckily for joe if it is a motor and his a mechanic he can rebuild it fairly cheaply. but the motor from tiny would be to early to stick in a clubman van? for the pollution side of things.

Joe, go pull Tiny's motor & remote box out and stick it in the van. Use the van's magic wand diff housing on the box, but check the diff bearing bores are round when fitted.
As van is magic wand, it's old enough to not need the pollution crap the late ones do.

ok went to mini spares for some advice today and got them to go for a drive, they think it is the bottom bearings in the motor that are rooted and need to be sorted. when i got it back to work my boss wasnt convinced that the motor is causing that much of a vibration and not having anyother knocking noises. so we lifted the van on the hoist and the first thing he did was grab the drive shafts and moving them.... the diff and shaft has about 5 mm of play in it. my boss bet me $50 that, thats where the vibration is coming from... on the basis that it is worse in the lowest gear with the most load and not as bad in the highest gear with little load.

i think im gonna get another opinion on the matter, so monster mini will hopefully pick up the van tomorrow and take it over to john at mini king to take a look.

if he says motor, then tinys motor is coming out and in to the van. if he says diff... ill get him to fix it and replace the unis with pot joints.

The play you describe is pretty common i believe and doesnt seem to cause horible vibrations in other mini's

It's a mini thing :D

Joe check your wheel nuts and wheel bearings. One of my front wheel bearings (tapered) came loose slightly and caused similar noises to what you've described. It also shagged my drive flange where the bearing sits too

I'm currently re-building a Cooper S engine which had exactly the same vibration in it.

Tony at Mini Spares said it sounded like the main bearings had gone - and guess what, when the engine was stripped down the main bearings were completely worn and the genuine S crank was a throw away.

I'd take Tony's advice. The longer you drive it, the worse it will get.

Wayne.

Big ends make loud knocking noises, but mains give a rumble, then vibrations.. then if you do nothing and are unlucky, the bearings can spin in the block. Then, you are up for a line bore job.
