Geez! Did you guys get this upset about The Italian Job? How is destroying one clubby van for entertainment worse than destroying a whole heap of Cooper S's?? not to mention the E-Type, Aston, Lambo, and multiple fiats.

My 2 cents anyways

becuase you can't get any minis new anymore

i did cringe when they wrecked those cars too though. still, what's a car movie without some smash-ups?

the story goes, the muira they push off the cliff was already smashed. on the dvd extras the bloke is saying they found one at a wreckers (ummm...ok?) that only had one side smashed, which is the side you don't see in the film. when the car is falling, check the engine bay... hollow!!!

I didn't mind the Italian job too much because Minis were still being made. They may have sacrificed three Minis in that movie but I'm sure that movie turned many people onto Minis and that resulted in many more than three Minis being purchased new. And I'm sure people have also restored Minis as well from their interest sparked by watching that movie. So I feel that the Italian job resulted in more Minis in this world, not less.

Besides the Ferrari that raced the speedboat to Monaco, can someone name one other 2nd hand car that has had a happy ending on Top Gear?

Lucky you didn't go see the filming like you said you were going to - I don't think they had enough security onsite!

The fact that it was already done and on display in the hangar when I went (and that episode airs 1st June) means it will probably be shown fairly early on in the series I suspect.

I agree with this. It is amazing what they did to try and kill that car - and the car ended up a star. But can anyone who saw that episode say they didn't enjoy it.

As with the Mini - yes, I'm disappointed it happened, but consider this. Why do they show little bits like that on promos for a show? To get publicity. It seems it has got a number of people on here foaming at the mouth - but you are all talking about it, which means it has achieved its goal. And I bet nearly everyone here watches the show, just to see what they actually do to it, and why (even if you say you won't). I know I probably will.

The Moke, on the other hand really was pointless (and this probably will be too) and would probably have been a harmless prank, if it hadn't been a bloody rare Export model.

But then, Top Gear is not exactly known for doing pointless stunts, are they? Like commuter bus racing, camper van racing, driving crappy Yank cars across crappy America, then trying to flog them to hurricane victims, after painting gay, anti religious and anti-American slogans all over them.

They do it for entertainment - and usually it works (although I was seriously disappointed with the first Aussie series) and it just coincides that they do it with cars.

Still without that useless blond git from the UK, who thinks he's an Aussie, maybe the show will be quite a bit better. And maybe it won't. I'm a fan of the UK show, so I'll reserve my opinion until after I see some of the next Aussie series.

Still, it would be nice to see a bit of balance - say with them showing something good about the Cooper S. It was listed in the latest issue of Top Gear Australia magazine as the all-time best car ever built in Australia - better than Falcon GTHO and Torana GTR XU1.

My threepence-worth (2c)

Cheers,
Watto.

Watto.. I agree with everything that you have said, but this is a show that is meant to be all about cars and is meant to be there for the car generation...

You would think that if they loved cars so much and knew so much about cars that they woudlnt destroy an export Moke (knowing how rare they are) or a Clubman van that apart from seats and door cards was an original unmolestered totally original example...!!!

There are millions of complete sh1tboxes on the road that they could get exactly the same entertainment out of by destroying. I would LOVE to see someone blow up a Hyundai Excel or run a Toyota Camry / Mitsubishi Magna off a cliff to see how much of it stayed intact... at least then its cars that have (really) no worth what so ever...
