If that's the same thread as a mini speedo it means you could put it between the speedo and cable and use the sensor to drive an auxiliary function like a trip computer or cruise control setup.
:D

You've been holding out on us. Looks perfect.

Just cap off the end if not using the old speedo. If you decided to refit the original speedo (selling the car?) the sensor could be removed in a few minutes. Easier than replacing a speedo cable. :)

I was hoping to find something from a common car so it would be easy and cheap to replace if the sensor died. But that Acewell sensor is no more expensive than a speed sensor for a Commodore or Falcon.

So that is the correct size?

I was just at S3 Performance picking up my acewell 1500 the other day and did not know they had this, was going to use a reed switch.
Will call them first thing tomorrow morning :D

My original speedo was completely out as well, haven't narrowed it down to the speedo or gearbox end yet. What are the chances that something in the gearbox is causing the inaccurate speed readout?
Speedo likes to sit aorund 60-80mph.

I just ordered one of those S3 units, so I'll let you lot know how it fits when I get it, hopefully tomorrow.

Excellent! :)

I predict Acewell will sell a lot of these sensors if this works, once the word is out. Just think how many cars there are with Smiths or Jaegar speedos with the same thread out there!

Cheers,

Sweet, if it works I'll drive down and pick one up :D

Back to the question I had, if a speedo isn't reading correctly, what are the chances that it's the the speedo gear in the gearbox that is broken and not the actual speedo.

If anything is broken it's likely to be the speedo itself, the parts are smaller and more delicate. If the gearbox has had the diff changed but not the speedo drive then it will be out. The difference is linear performance, if at 100kmh your speedo says your doing 120 then is showing 120% of actual speed, so at 60 kph moving it would display 72.

If it's non linear, and all over the shop, the spring in the speedo could be crook.

Update!

I got the S2 sensor today. It's a lot smaller than I thought it's be.
There's good news and good news, it fits into the 60s speedo cable without modification, and will fit the speedo too, though the square key will need to be shortened.

The design of the unit is modular and very easy to pull apart, so making adapter parts to suit a clip on speedo will be quite easy.

Sadly, the square drive pin at the gearbox end is bigger than the speedo end, so it won't go down there easily. Could be done, don't get me wrong, a bit of shrink wrap on the sensor pin and a M19F to M12M adapter and it would work.

I may get some pics up later.
I hope it works with my speedo though, this is only a two wire output sensor.

Cool. As long as it fits the speedo end of the cable, I'm ordering one. I've already got the screw-on type cable on the Moke anyway, so its a bolt in.

I haven't bought the speedo yet, I'm looking at various 85mm options, VDO, Speco and AutoMeter. I haven't even looked at the number of connections on them yet. I guess I need to research that. What speedo are you using?

Cheers,

At this stage I'm using a VDO speedo. It works with three wire hall effect sensors and 2 wire inductive sensors.

Hopefully the S2 is an inductive type. It has a small magnet inside it whatever it is.

I came to the same conclusion you did, after finding the VDO speedo instruction manual online here:

http://www.egauges.com/pdf/vdo/0-515-012-051.pdf

I've ordered the sensor from the S3 website now, so I'm committed. I figure it's easier to find a different speedo than a different sensor that fits so easily. 8)

Cheers,

I now have the sensor and a VDO speedo.

After cutting approx 10mm off the shaft of the sensor and tidying up the cut end with a file, I can confirm it fits a standard screw-thread smiths speedo, inline with speedo cable.

Now I've got to build my new dash. With the speedo bits sorted, I have more motivation now. :D

Time for a revival of this one.

I finally finished the new dash for my Moke today.

Some pics:

Unfortunately the S3 Performance sensor does not seem to like working with the VDO speedometer. I've rechecked the wiring and either my sensor is duff or the VDO speedo does not like the sensor. :(

The speedo cable is definitely turning the sensor, but the speedometer is simply not reading a signal.

After some googling I found a GM sensor part number 90148828 apparently fits the Mini speedo cable. Even better, check this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=110427853276&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT

I'm considering ordering one of these sensors and give it a try.

Cheers,
