Should it also have the 3.5 inch Cooper S wheels? These have the hubcaps jutting out much more than the "normal" Oz S wheels....

Hi Mick,
English Cooper S's had 3.5" wheels standard but 4.5" were a popular option.

I believe Ivan at Castle Hill has a 970 maybe he can help

The wire door checks were an accessory, I remember them for sale at my local BMC dealer.
I still have one, somewhere...

I sold an NOS set on e-Pay last year and got silly money for them, 50 or 60 US$. The idea was probably OK but the only give when they reached their travel was in the A pillar and they often ripped part of the A pillar away. Straps are more gentle.

Owner has just confirmed that it is a "Y" not a "7" on the engine - he read it wrong.

He also confirms:

1. All internals were leathered in 1980's with Connolly matched hides in the original colour. Claims that all the rock stars in 70's and 80's were doing this as Mini didn't offer it as an option.
2. It was resprayed in 1980's to tidy it up.
3. It was mechnically gone over by a Ferrari shop in England in 30's just before he took it back to the states. They replaced any rusty bits etc.

So, it looks like we have a MK1 Cooper S, 1966, 1275 that has been upgraded with leather, tidied with a respray and mechanically gone over 30 years ago.

Mmmm....what now?

I wouldn't trust it now, that's 70 odd years  :D

Hiya,

Is it worth $50,000 plus though - which it would be by the time it got here???

A lot would need replacing if it hasn't been touched for 22 years, unless you wanted to keep it in a museum.

Surely there are better value for money Cooper S examples here in Oz?

cheers! jon

Hiya,

A quick five minute look identified these – I have no idea about the cars myself, but at half the price and a vehicle that was at least useable…..

I found those as well.

All have obvious non-original parts.

Em...and although I am no expert, I thought Mk1 finished in 1967? Must have kept it in the dealers yard for a year then?

Too hard, too many copies.

Oz Mk1 S went through to sometime in 1969, not 1967.
We had a 1968 Mk1.

Lack of non-original parts doesn't make a 'copy'. If it has the all important numbers, (even better with documentation), then you have a good start. The correct parts and detailing can be added slowly over time with a little patience and research.

Very true.

I've actually asked myself that very question: when does a vehicle stop becoming worth looking at. If you had the original bodyshell and engine is that enough?!

Ideally I think for the price that was being asked for that one you'd want it pretty close.
