Yes.
Original guides were all square on the bottom, but most new 1275 ones are bullet shaped.
I shorten them in the lathe and redo this taper.
Using 1275 guides, you can fit proper valve stem seals to early heads.

just finished reinstalling the cylinder head. all is well.

i will post more detail and pics tomorrow, but i have determined that although the standard springs i had fitted were almost bound/crushed as we have been discussing, the end result is actually due to poor manufacture of the springs. the head specialist made a valid comment, if they were in fact coil bound/crushed then the 6000rpm on the dyno for 2 hours on and off would have caused more than one valve spring to fail.

the pics i will post tomorrow will give you visual proof, but you can see were the lines are on the spring from being drawn/manufactured, have cracked/failed exactly down these lines.

i have also noted the steel inside the fractured areas are multi coloured and although i am no metal specialist i know crap steel when i see it, and this is crap!

the cylinder head specialist measured the oringonal springs i had fitted and found them to be fine with the lift i had, although the guides were very close to being not enough clearance. although he is not a mini engine specialist he suggests the valve springs failed because of their quality and not just because of the cam lift i have etc etc. although that may have been a contributing factor to the failure.

the guides i fitted were 1275 guides apparently and this is one reason why they needed to be machined down, also the guy wanted to ensure plenty of clearance from the retainer to the guide at max cam lift so he machined about 3-4mm off all of them.

i now have hat type valve stem seals on every valve. very please started the engine tonight - NO SMOKE - Wooohooo!!!

thanks again everyone for their help. always makes working on my mini a pleasure.

will post pics tomorrow.

Glad to hear Jason,,, but i will almost bet that with less lift (or better set-up) those springs wouldn`t have failed

sorry,,, i`m being picky tonight :-)

& flick those stupid spring clips off the colletts too while you`re at it,,, they do nothing except "Maybe" ping off & fall into your engine "somewhere"

So when you say this Matt you mean, just discard the clips because they are not necessary and run the head without them. Reason i ask is, a mate has an engine that he is going to use in a car that he is restoring and when he was putting the head back together he'd lost a couple of the clips so i gave him some off an old head that i had and i couldn't believe how easy they were to remove, which i thought was strange.

Ok finally got a chance to upload these pics. Had a big weekend on with a trade show and work function saturday, bathurst/F1/motorGP sunday

So......the failed spring broke into 3 peices.

Having a close look you can see a fracture along the line that is in the outer skin of the metal from where it was drawn in manufacture. you can see the different colours inside the steel, obviously poor quality steel.

I am not sure 100% where these springs are made, but the part number on my invoice when i bought them was VSP580P.

just thought i would post this info up as i am sure someone else may use these springs in their engine and may not have the luck i did with not dropping a valve and ending in internal catastrophe

Here are the 526 springs installed. much better.

Chinese quality springs.
They can copy anything, except Quality. :x
You want Quality out of there, go live there and make it happen.

ps. yes, I have worked there for a bit.

That is a Viper Cams Part no. but I doubt those were Vipers, most likely just another company ripping off their part no.
