Brand spankers. Actually after I blew a hole in an exhaust valve way back then the head was crack tested (and found cracked, and welded). It's been through a lot this head, and survived. So,



... not this time I actually have a good 202 head here, but I'm rather fond of this '295 so I'll get the guides properly fitted and press it back into service I measured the valve stems this evening, they've all got less than one thou wear on the stems, so although I'll replace the exhausts the inlets will go back in.

It'll get a hot tanking before the seats are recut, and it may as well get another crack test for good measure, there's no rush to have it back on the road as long as the Hilux gets me around

So I dropped the head off yesterday with all the bits to get a tanking and the guides fitted. Interesting... the head man pointed out something that hadn't occurred to me -- the oil weeping into the cylinders was likely seeping around the knurled guides, and not due to excessive wear on the ID.

So that being the case we're going to try and have some oversize guides machined to fit. They've got part numbers for a good candidate and can easily turn down the OD, the trick will be their being able to find a 0.280" reamer to size the ID.

You just need a standard 9/32" solid reamer for this.

Mmmm.. thanks for the tip, Doc. Sadly they only seem to have adjustable reamers, and then their smallest is 3/8"

I don't doubt the machine shop will be able to find a suitable reamer, question is whether they ream me for it

Really? 3/8 is the smallest they carry! Geez.. I'd suggest blackwoods too or Cuttingtools Australia. I don't know if Cuttingtools Australia deal direct to the public... if they don't give me a yell and I'll throw a couple on the next order at work. 9/32 isn't anything special or out of the ordinary, its a shame that most stores will only stock a bear minimal these days... You could also try Cromwell Industrial Tools... what happened to propper tool shops where you could walk in and buy this stuff?

Something to remember too when you're buying your reamers... in soild ones there are generally Machine and Hand reamers.... Hand Reamers are tapered for about the first 1/4 of the flutes so that you can get them started.... just remember that you need to wind it the whole way through the hole to make sure you get the right size.... machine reamers just have a 45 degree chamfer and then they're straight,,,, so once you get them going you have your size.,... for what you're doing, I'd suggest a hand reamer.... I reeeeeeaaaaalllllly wouldn't suggest an adjustable.

Got the head back this morning, with nice new oversize OD valve guides fitted. Love the clean cast look





They gave it the barest of skims to make sure the face is flat, since there's very little meat left on it I didn't want them taking 10 thou off...

Giving it a coat of paint now before I get stuck into refitting it tomorrow!

It lives!

Went back together pretty easily today, the only drama being that I realised I didn't have a new exhaust manifold gasket and had to reuse the old one.

The biggest surprise (after it fired, it cranked for a while) was the absence of leaks. I think this is the first time I've put an engine back together and it's sealed first time

Happy days, I'm back in the Mini again The Hilux can finally get a rest...
