The bling machine fired up tonight for the first time effectively. Had a quick rumble last night but tonight was it's first go for more than a few seconds. Only ran it for a minute as it didn't have the alternator wired up, and had a slight coolant leak from the housing. Tonight after I fired it up, I changed the gaskets on the housing. Will let them cure overnight and refill the coolant tomorrow night and finish off the alternator wiring.

Managed to back it out of the garage just as it was starting to sprinkle so it went straight back in. At least I know the clutch and 1st & reverse gears work. Still has the bonnet off so it wasn't going anywhere yet.

A few more nights pottering away and it should be ready for the weekend, a week late but never mind. 8)

You shoulld start the motor (obviously full of water, oil etc) and NOT let it idle. The cam and lifters are lubricated by oil splash. By running it at 2000 rpm or so for 15mins+ the lifters and cam lobes bed in without being starved of lubrication.
After this it's not a good idea to set the idle too low either, when running hi lift modified cams- it doesn't improve their life.
Mine idles at 1100-1200 on a good day.
