I had a new water pump but the impeller was sitting at least 4mm from the housing so I decided to push it down the shaft a bit closer to the housing. The one that came off had just 1mm of clearance.

Well the impeller snapped in bits before it would budge!

That was tonight's little swearing session.

My speedo!

doing 20km/h speedo is fluttering from 110 km/h to the fuel gauge... the speedo looks like one of the newer ones too.

Sometimes the seal in speedo drive at gearbox leaks and cable 'pumps' oil up outer and into speedo head, gunking it up. Tell tale is oilyness around back of speedo.

I am finding quite a bit of oil.. well mostly grease type stuff on the cable but not on the back of the speedo its self.
How hard is it to change the seal?
The car is at the mechanics atm but he reckons the speedo needs to be re calibrated, I will ask him to check the speedo drive seal tomorrow.

My fuel gauge. It was coming and going, but it's not coming anymore. It's very off putting not knowing when you're going to run out of fuel.

Around 1994 I had a 1425 race spec engine built.... 6k was a fortune for me back then. It only ever saw road use (I was young and didn't understand torque) the motor was well built, the gearbox was built by a specialist who still has a good rep in the industry to this day. I gave the box to him in Febuary and he said, when do you want it back? I jokingly said as long as its before Christmas, then I made the mistake of paying in full before the job was done. I got the box back 4 days before Xmass.
Almost one year later the diff pin broke and I drove it 20ks to my mechanic just in time for the oil pump to turn to fine metal particals and bores,bearings.. Pretty much everything trashed.
My fault? Most probably, but if anyone had suggested a cross pin diff to deal with the engine, I would have spilt less tears. A small amount of experience and advice can go a long way on anyone willing to listen to it.

Drove the Clubman Van to work and I think the engine needs a rebuild as its very smokey after coasting down hills.
Pity the poor cars behind me when I accelerate at the bottom
Looks like an engine out when the weather warms up a bit so I can work on th car at night

Yeah, done that. And cleaned the connections too. The issue must be somewhere else. I'll do some more in depth investigationing when I get the chance. Any other thoughts on likely culprits?

Would be worth checking the sender unit (which obviously has to be done with the tank empty or at least lower than the height of the sender unit). I believe they can be checked electronically with a multimeter, but I'd suggest having another known good one to swap over anyhow.

The other option is could it be a wire at the back of the speedo? - have you been installing stereos or doing any other work behind there recently?

On old Renaults, they have two types of floats - a cork one which disintegrates and fails, or a plastic barrel, which can crack and fill with petrol which causes it to sink anyhow. Can't recall what a mini has, but just an idea. Does the gauge move at all when you power on/off the ignition?

you can get the drive out in situ, bit of a fiddle. tiny seal in fitting where cable goes on box. You could try cleaning "insides' of speedo using contact cleaner or the like. What sort of speedo is it? Old centre one or leyland 'front of driver'? You can take them apart, to very carefully clean.
