The "con" of "not being able to do brake/suspension work" on a 4 poster is nonsense.

My Dutch Mini specialist regularly used a 4 post hoist to lift the cars and then placed blocks under it (takes a bit of faffing about raising, blocking, lowering, blocking on the hoist ramps and raising again) to allow the hoist to lift the body rather than the wheels. Then you have the wheels/brakes/suspension at just the right height to work on.

cheers
michael

I think saying it's nonsense is missing the point a little. Can a 4 poster be used for wheel-off operations? Yes. Is it designed for it? No. Does it make it easier than doing it on the floor with a jack? No. As you say, plenty of faffing about.

I know plenty of 4 post hoists that you can use with wheels off operations. They just use a jack that rolls along a track between the ramps.
It is the best of both worlds.

For full on suspension work I would rather use a two post hoist, for routine maintenance including brake work I would rather use a 4 post hoist.

Do you mean the single post, four post, or the mods to the garage and garage door? I've seen single post in Oz for $11k - maybe cheaper if you're in the trade. Plus install of course.

Smac your talking out ur bum again, Mick your 100% correct, jacking trays and beams are supllied with most if not all good 4 posters,

If you have been doing your home work, 4 posters are the only way to go for mechanical work and long term parking,

2 posters are fine on modern cars, try holding a classic mini on its sills for while fine if you want a bannana car, how do you jack your car when on the ground do you use the sills I hope bloody not

Lift King in Sydney Rolan is a great bloke and has a great product for those in NSW, remember when buying these Hoists the shipping find a good agent in your state or local, collect with a car float and take home, saves loads of money

Also some other usefull infomation none of the prices include Hydrolic Oil, so remember this when doing the deal this is not cheap another 250 plus ontop

I would back my 4 poster from lift king, now aero king, with my life and collection, I wouldnt park my cars on a 2 poster any day, and no there not just minis, my 4 poster can hold 2 minis and I back it, so think about that when your buying, designing and building a shed, add the height for a lift and mezzanene,

Also when shopping around see, what deals you can get from hoist companies, Lift king do air jacks and other great bits

Good luck and enjoy, you will never look back and never had so many friends pop around, oh parties in the shed are great you have a huge dinner table to serve on

Again? Care to qualify that?

The point I was making is that a 4 poster does not allow you any more flexibility than the ground for suspension work. You are still working off a jack. Yes there's other advantages of a 4 post, particularly in the OP's specific situation (being a space issue, and the fact it's a mini) hence I was recommending one.

Must be hot where you are huh?

Interesting video

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XLUjq6ijvVc

Now i have your attention, have a read of the NSW Workcover regs for hoists...

http://www.workcover.nsw.gov.au/formspublications/publications/Documents/cranes_hoists_winches_guide_4422.pdf

This document says
Quote:
All cranes, hoists and winches designed after the commencement of the Regulation must be manufactured
and inspected, and tested (if required), according to the relevant part of the Australian Standard AS 1418
(Appendix A).

and
Quote:
they should be used in accordance with the relevant part of the AS 2550 series of
Australian Standards, Cranes, hoist and winches – Safe use (Appendix B).

Whilst domestic hoists may not be required to fully comply with the same standards as the industrial ones, you would have to question their compliance to the standard with the seller.

I'll try and dig up a copy of the standards mentioned at work and quote the relevant sections.

cheers
michael

ps I am just getting dimensions so the archtect can design the new garage around the lift.
