Today marks the start of a new chapter in the life of this car. It was formally passed from NSW Police Traffic and Highway Patrol Command to new custodians the NSW Police Academy at Goulburn in an official ceremony this morning. The vehicle takes pride of place in the Academy lobby overlooked by a display board that outlines its history. Police recruits in training will now get a glimpse of how their predecessors carried out their road safety duties.
Assistant Commissioner Michael Corboy talked about the role it and other unmarked Cooper S's played in reducing the road toll when six of them first took to the road between Sydney and Goulburn in June 1966. A Canberra Times news article two weeks later said "not one fatal accident had been reported in the whole of the southern police district" since their introduction. "In the same period the previous year there were 12 road deaths". He also confirmed what I'd heard in speaking to some of those who drove them, that they were one of the most effective, exciting and memorable pursuit cars they had driven during their police career.
Photo below is of Dana Jennings who drove this very car whilst a constable in the Special Traffic Patrol at Mittagong. Dana has been a wealth of knowledge to Watto during the writing of the Police Minis article for The Mini Experience magazine, and to me also in subsequent research efforts.
The car is still registered and roadworthy and I'm assured it will get out of the lobby from time to time to clear its lungs.
