Did the S only come with a 1098 or were there other engines?

All 1978 Mini or Mini S would have come with 998 motors. They stopped fitting the 1098cc in the middle of 1975.

Ok, reviving the discussion; I went and picked up my panels from matt on Friday and talked to him about it. He said that he swore it was an LS because everything on was LS. I'm getting incredibly confused now. Could there have been a mix up with the plates at the factory? Could it be that they used other shells and made them into LS'? Or could it be that someone was so determined on getting an LS, that they bought my mini S and custom fitted every component from an LS into it?

Could it really be so that somebody put a full LS Interior in, resprayed it in Hi Ho Silver and added the LS decals and then fitted a genuine LS engine aswell?

Sure, my mate bought a van last year with all the 1275LS trim & running gear, in Qld. All that was missing was the LS badging.
We drove it back to Sydney from Coolangatta.

Could've been a total reshell, PO could've had the LS and maybe rear end write off? Transferred absolutely everything into an 'S' shell?

All the components needed to 'update' an S to an LS were readily available as BMC accessories, so it's possible.

Likely? I don't know.

See the brochure I posted earlier.

Just a thought - check the holes in the grille for the L badge. If it was originally an S grille the holes would be drilled later to accommodate the L badge. You may be able to detect differences between the two sets of holes - factory versus later.

P.S. Also the distance between the L and S holes may be slightly different to that on an original LS grille. Another LS owner may be able to provide the dimensions.

Will do. The grille is beyond repair but I should still be able to see that... Looks like it got reversed into by something jacked up and the grille got crushed by the two ball or something...dunno, it had been in storage for quite some time by the looks of things.

If you're right about the resell then it's possible I actually have pretty much no LS left, I only have the shell and glass so it might as well be a mini S. Seeing as it is 104987, probably not all that much of a bad thing either...

What engine prefix do you have? The LS and the S share the same motor.

Don't have one, that's why I said it might as well be an S. Next on my list of things to get though!

Going purely on memory but I think the badges just use the existing perforations in the grill, no need for holes.
