Nope there were 2800 997s made here, and only 1100 998s. According to John Parnell's Original Mini Cooper book.
998 Cooper stopped here about when the 1275 S was released in 1965.

I don;t think the 998 is a Cooper. the enine number should start with 9f not 9Y as per John Purnells book. Anyone else noticed that, or am I wrong?

Well the body is 2 tone, only Coopers had that back option then.
And I think 9Y/Sa/ was an Oz Cooper 998 prefix?

/Sa/ means Cooper gear ratios.... if a Deluxe it would be /Ta/

9F would mean a UK engine, 9Y would be Australian built, yes? Were Cooper engines being built here in '64?

Yes they were, some or all 998 Cooper motors were Oz built.
Parnell has admitted there are errors and omissions in his book, re Oz Cooper cars. He will fix it in the next version.

The 9y/Sah is definitely a correct number for a late 998 Cooper. About half of the 998's were built using this motor which carries the Australian number (9Y), prior to this the English numbering of 9F was used. I believe that all 9F motors that came here were low compression and all of the 9Y were high compression.

Cheers
Steve

Only a day or so to go, looks like someone might grab a bargain here, the cooprs seem good, apart from points already noted, wrong doors trim etc.

Who wants to guess the final figures? :?

Ive given myself a limit on the 997. Ive also got to factor in $1000 for transport costs. Lets just wait and see I guess.....

Is it just me or is the 850 the most genuine? It looks remarkably straight & neat. Be a great project to get back to vanilla methinx. IMHO

But keep an eye on the price... I think it will keep rising due to the clean condition.

I think the 998 Cooper may end up as the bargain. 8)

Thx, Country. I will keep my bids moderate but I admit to being v.keen. Be a nice companion for my '70 Mk.2. Every et needs a companion surely.

The perfect companion for a Cooper S is a Morris 1100. (and I just happen to have a spare one for sale...)

Cooper64 was telling me the 850 is the best buy and most genuine - started first pop and runs smooth not much needed to get it registered, Cooper S most doubtful - others in between
