Mick - did you get a response from the professor you asked about having the coil installed the wrong way?

With what you've described, that's exactly what's happened -- the dizzy drive is 180º out.

Would that have any negative effects..? I'm not exactly keen on switching around - but should I..? Given it's all working..?

Just classic, really. Coil wired the wrong way, dissy in 180º out... I wonder if anything else is in backwards and still working.

No problem really apart apart from the leads being mixed up and your vacuum advance pointing down.

Not a difficult problem to repair either however, just have to be careful and have a spare rocker stud lying around....

Don't be concerned, it will not hurt it at all.
What will cause real pain however is trying to remove the dizzy drive to turn it around and dropping it into the sump.

Not as uncommon as you might think. My van was the same when I got it..

the bolts for the radiator end engine mount/radiator support bracket are best, they're about 5" long - ideal for the job

I had my Pulsar dizzy apart a couple of weeks back and when I re-assembled it I fitted the top shaft 180° to the bottom shaft by mistake. (it was a 50/50 guess) So I just swapped the plug leads 180° (top to bottom, left to right.) It is no big deal, the car will not be able to tell the difference.

So? If it does not start you automatically assume the plug leads are 180° and you swap them. It is only a 4 cyl dizzy, it is not rocket science.

There is a few different ways to get it arse about, there is the dizzy drive on the cam, there is the drive dog on the bottom of the dizzy, there is the top shaft on the bottom shaft, etc.

Every time I fit a dizzy I just assume I have got it wrong and I am prepared for the worst.

or when you do it to yourself and then have forgotten all about it a couple of years later

What is there to forget? I never assume that they were fitted right in the first place.

Given it's a 43D4 and doesn't have a vacuum advance, that's not even a problem.

Glad to hear it won't damage anything. Also glad to hear that I don't have to fix it! If I had to fix it, I'm sure I'd drop the dizzy drive into the sump, and not be able to get it to sit in properly...

Mr Read's the last to have played with my timing, he didn't mention it... I'm guessing he didn't have the plug leads off, all I really know is it went in pinging, and came out not pinging. That was when I first bought it...

Ah, well there you go then. It's his fault, he's having a lend

And it continues! I've now got a Red Module to play with (got it running on a blue module), and it came:
Quote:
Plus, now for your convenience *High Quality Silicon is supplied in every pack*
What should one do with this..? Smear it underneath the baseplate, where it goes onto the Dissy body..? :? I'm guessing it's heat sink paste, and that would make the most sense to me, but I figured I've learned a lot here, I may as well continue to gather knowledge from the masters!

Oh, and I don't believe Mr Read had the dissy out (or even just the plug leads off), so I'm not gonna blame him for it... I'll blame the Previous Owner, and the people who built the engine/gearbox/diff for him. Though I am surprised that there was no bite from Mr Read. Maybe he thinks he's well enough respected around here that he doesn't have to defend his work? :P
